Original recorded version -

Speed-adjusted version (some folks think it's a more natural sound - what do you think?)

The slower version does sound a bit more logical to me, but I love the energy of the original. Guess we'll never know for sure...

His voice sounds like it has more real expressiveness to it in the slower version. The faster one reminds me of an engineered compression.

One of my all time favorite songs.

It's a put-on!

I agree, love it.

The actual music in that song, especially at the beginning before the lyrics, is just incredible. Almost mesmerizing.

Into the Mystic..Van Morrison..I want to rock your gypsy soul..what a great line!
Mississippi..Train..the horns are so haunting
On the Edge of 17..Fleetwood Mac..you have to turn it up!
Babylon..David Gray....already mentioned earlier..mercy I love that song.
Symphony for the Devil..also mentioned earlier
And the worst but most eclectic song of all.. Walk on the Wild Side by Lou Reed. And the colored girls go do do do do do..
Anything from Rubber Soul...my favorite Beatles album

My quick list...and they're usually not "the" song of any group.

Sympathy for the Devil
Subterranean Homesick Blues

Immigrant Song
Hazy Shade of Winter
Enter Sandman
Betterman
Breed
So Whatcha Want
Losing my Religion

I've always loved this song.

I know..just the opening line is enough to make a good song. That voice of his is so clear and resonant. Big fan of clear resonance. :)

Look out mama there's a white boat coming up the river.

Truth be known, he wrote that for Lynyrd Skynyrd, but ended up recording it himself.

that song among others he wrote was pretty much the basis of all modern music. I could easily segue every r&r song I know and it lead me back here

Everlast. I love how Santana's Geetar sings....like when he says there's a monster and out comes that word in pure sound.

This song is another tribute. It's kind of haunting...I tried to learn it, but couldn't separate myself from the emotion.

Snow, I never heard the song. It is wrenching, poignant, and true. Thanks for sharing it.

You reminded me of another Memphis group that was comparable to Led Zepplin, the Beatles, the Stones...they just didn't have the right marketing thing going.

First two songs simply because my college roommate would literally listen to them over and over and over and over again. While I would get fed up and want to hear something else, I actually never got tired of hearing the songs themselves.
Can't Find My Way Home - Blind Faith
Summertime - Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Co

These Days - Gregg Allman's version / Jackson Brown's song
Shine on You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd (Wish You Were Here in a close second)
Ripple - Grateful Dead (Terrapin Station and Eyes of the World in a close second and third)
West End Blues and What a Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong

I should have never started this, cause I could go on and on.

West End Blues - sorry, I don't know how to paste the whole image, just the link

Armstrong's opening cadenza and his solo towards the end are pure magic. Hines piano is none too shabby either. An almost perfect piece of music.

Love Jerry Jeff, but included David Bromberg's cover. He's the one that made me fall in love with the song.
