Similar technology. The ODU project was to explore ways to do it in a way that was much more affordable, making it a viable option for lots of locations. Obviously, the tech exists as seen in your article, its just incredibly expensive.
Yup, I got to talk to one of the guys close to the project, apparently it was really cool and a lot of fun to work on. There's just no money for it right now since it was funded mostly on federal grants.
And as I understand it, now the same crooks who won't dismantle the ODU track, even though it's in the contract, want to bring the same thing to Va Beach.
I wish I could take credit for this but the best description of the Maglev track I have seen was in a letter to the editor in the Virginian-Pilot where the writer referred to it as the ODU Stonehenge.
