Booooo, this is so lame. This will change everything, and not for the better. Things have gotten too big

$10,000 a year. Guesses on who will cave next, and how quickly this number balloons.

The day that major college athletics died.

You got that right, nothing good happens from this.

For scholarship athletes the fact that part or all of your college eduaction is not payment enough.

For walk-on/non-scholarship athletes they just wanted to continue playing a game at a high level they love and represent a school.

Yes student-athletes put in a lot of extra work (that other students do not) but nothing they did not sign up for and know about going in and not too mention the added benefits that they also get from being a student-athlete.

Pre or post taxes? I can't imagine this will be exempt...

That has to be taxable income I would think. Gonna be interesting how many of the payees get dinged by the IRS for non payment!!

Gonna need an extra class for tax implications now.

This is just so bad. Now we are seeing the beginning of the P5 morphing into a real semipro league. Out in the open anyway.

Do Universities implement withholding?

Do players get suspended for past due taxes?

Do players pay SS?

I would think the answer would have to be yes to all of the above. It is income.

The $10,000 will be split evenly, $5,000 apiece, between cost-of-attendance and payment for the University’s use of the athlete’s name and likeness

I'm thinking they would be considered contract labor and issued 1099's. Yes, players will have to pay SS and medicare either way. Though, they may get away with not paying it on the cost-of-attendance portion.

OK. Just a couple things for the record, since everyone is pissed about this:

1) This article is very badly written and has no clarification. It's click-bait. They aren't cutting everyone checks starting tomorrow morning. This is the money they claim to have estimated/set aside in case the NCAA loses every appeal (O'Bannon, etc.) that it's involved in right now.

B) A lot of things can/will have to change before Texas just starts handing out checks when you fill out your forms every preseason. This is a middle step in a very long and ongoing discussion in which both sides have a lot of reasonable points that neither opposing side wants to listen to over their screaming.

iii) Patterson (with his massive budget) is one of the people in the industry who has MOST vehemently OPPOSED student-athletes receiving any form of additional benefit. Odds are decent that he just said this (or inflated the figure) to get people up in arms.

Everyone have a beer.

**Edited to include this helpful link on why this is not the story you think it is**

Lol , really suspended for not paying taxes ? Do they currently suspend players for not paying their credit card debt ?

UT makes 82 million a year closely in profit, that 6 million dollar hit is not that much for them.

The problem with college football is that not all athletes want a college education, people need to realize that. Is a college degree a great tool for life , yes. Do all people feel the need to attend college ........no. So essentially the NCAA has been mandating athletes who want to play pro to attend college.

I think this is great , except for the schools who cant afford it like JMU.

This is really gonna suck. The number of stories reporting players stealing $32 worth of crab legs and $1 Burger King fountain drinks are going to significantly decrease in the future.

Seriously, I think this will expedite the P5 split and provide most of the G5 and the FCS top level the ability to form more geographically centered leagues. It will bring on the next round of realignment in 5 -10 years. Now that JMU has an athletic vision and strategy we should (cough) be ready to act.
