So they are saying in that article that SOS will be calculated by adding a schools wins against schools with winning records, losing records and dividing it by losses to schools with winning records and losing records.
In that case East Carolina has a good loss against South Carolina. Marshall has no losses.
Marshall Quality Wins
Akron
Middle Tennessee
Ohio (.500 now)
East Carolina Quality Wins
Virginia Tech

It also makes the point that they will reward strong OOC scheduling even if it doesn't turn out to be that strong. Basically that if they believe you intended to schedule tough you'll get credit. That would be a big time help to ECU because clearly @South Carolina, @VT, and UNC is intending to schedule tough even if all 3 happen to be having down years.

Agree. Interesting discussion.
I don't think someone should be rewarded for "trying" to play a tough schedule. The ex-coaches like that idea. Good reason to keep ex-coaches off the committee. Like Luck, I think it is what it is, not what you thought it would be.

I agree with you if the team has a loss. But if the team is undefeated and tried their best to get a strong schedule, they should be rewarded with a spot in the playoff.
For example, if Marshall had scheduled Texas, Virginia Tech, and Hawai'i, they'd deserve a helluva lot more credit for an undefeated season than if they scheduled Texas Tech, Boston College, and New Mexico (even though the second group looks slightly better this year).

How would that be fair to a team who played a tougher schedule? Goes back to on the field, not history, not eyeballs.

Scheduling Boston College didn't work out so well for USC this season.
