Question about ACL tear
I have fortunately never experience it before just dislocations of kneecap but I read there is a UTk OT playing with a torn ACL. Is this safe? Didn't Dorland tear his ACL?

RE: Question about ACL tear
I think it depends on a ton of issues, for example if you care about ever jumping again or having lateral mobility, then you probably want to rest it.

I played VB with a guy who played on a torn knee, but he was 35+ and his knee was done anyway. He was never going to jump again, so he figured why not play since he enjoys that?

I had a partial MCL (not ACL) tear in college and didn't stay off it long enough (wanted to play again, came back weeks too early). My vertical is half what it was when I was 17…

Our RB is 100% right to not play on it I'm guessing.

RE: Question about ACL tear
Both mine are torn, obviously on separate occasions, and both are complete tears.

It's the lateral motion that's a killer with a torn acl. Everything else is decent. I'm sure with a serious brace it can be done but I'm sure the stability is not too good.

Yes, it's not very safe. Gilliam has no aspirations of playing in the NFL and is a 5th year guy, so he's playing with a torn ACL.

People are commending him, but I think he'll probably lament this decision in 10 years.

RE: Question about ACL tear
I tore mine during the summer when I was 19. I played intramurals that fall, and a lot of pick-up basketball, on a brace and had re-ligamentation surgery the week before Christmas. It hurt. A lot. It was very unstable, and I took a risk of damaging it more (the instability could have led to another ligament tear and more cartilage damage). I cannot imagine playing OL with a completely torn ACL.

Thanks. I found it hard to just walk with an dislocated knee cap. I just couldn't imagine the pain of what an ACL tear could be.

RE: Question about ACL tear
Like most have said, it just depends. I tore mine in college and had surgery to fix it. I tore it again about a year after surgery. The rehab time was really hard on me because I was used to being so active. I asked the Doc if there was anything else we could do aside from another surgery and 6+ month rehab. He simply asked if I ever intended to play sports at a truly competitive level again? I played college baseball for one year and quit before the first knee injury. I told him I had no intention of doing anything outside of recreational sports and he advised me that there was no need for surgery then. I still get out and play basketball and flag football without any real pain and I do not even bother wearing a brace anymore. If the kid has no intention of playing football beyond college and it is his last year to play then I do not blame him at all for putting a brace on and playing.

It was bad right after it happened, but the pain subsides pretty quick. When I was doing rehab the physical therapist told me about working with people who tore their ACL during football games, sat on the bench for a quarter or two and were back out because the pain had already subsided and they thought they were okay. Of course, the next day they usually woke up in pain with a very swollen knee. In my experience it was really more a mental scare hearing the pop noise and feeling your knee shift in a direction you know it is not supposed to...

RE: Question about ACL tear
I had a partial tear in my left knee when I was 15. It was 3-4 weeks in a gel cast with crutches. At that age I completely recovered.

There's no doubt that, your vertical is much less than half of what it was, plus it's been a long time since you were 17. Enjoy the memories.

For an OL it's not unusual to delay surgery until after the season. A brace can stabilize and restrict movement providing enough support to play.
