RE: Mt. Olive
I have confidence in Coach Jones to use the tools and talents at his disposal. It is hard to judge the team or any individual player based on one game. Here are my observations from watching one game. We have a deep team this year. All 11 guys who played will help us this year. Not many teams can do that. I don't see an all conference type player yet but I do see that one of our strengths will be the ability to present multiple lineups which should give us a number of matchup advantages. Our rebounding should be strong and I was particularly impressed with the offensive rebounding. Two things that are going to be problematic if they continue. One is that our foul shooting is atrocious. Not sure why, but poor foul shooting has been a nemesis to our program for a number of years now. Granted, some of the missed foul shots were taken by players who are not likely to have many attempts this year which contributed to our poor performance but when the best we could do was Freeman at 4 for 6, there is a lot of room for improvement. The second problem is that the ball has to be in the hands of our best guard lineup at the critical times during the game. While Mosely is a great 3 point shooter, I'm not sure that he plays much in close games down the stretch where we have a lead. Palmore, while a steady ball handler and defensive player, needs to improve on his foul shooting and can he be a defensive stopper? If so, he adds a dimension that could make us an NCAA team. To me, he is the "X" factor for this season. Personally, I have confidence in him and our team to get the job done.

RE: Mt. Olive
We'll be much better at the line this season. What about the 3pt shooting that was very good. The team defense looked ok at times. Help seemed slow at times. Ambrose is such a good shooter and works really hard to get open. I think he's going to have a solid year. Denzel looked comfortable and played very good defense, he's improved a bunch since the beginning of last year. We had good team ball with a bunch of assists.

Why are you guys on Nik. The guy is a walk on who will pay his own way for three years for the chance to play D1 ball. He had the 2nd most rebounds while playing the 11th least minutes. I'm not worried about is FTs falling. He hit 80% at CNU, and hits them in practice, the guy was tight. Also the 2nd best comment was made by the guy who work in the NBA close to 35 years, at the beginning of last year. Note, not this year. Nik isn't a starter and will be 2nd big off the bench and ahead of some other scholarship players. He'll play about 10 min/gm and be an asset to the Monarchs and glad to have him.

I'm worried about Aaron, in a game where all you had to do was drive the lane and you got fouled. He had ZERO free throws. He needs to make that move to the rim and get the shot or to the line.

Arledge was much sharper the last time I saw him, we need him and I thought he would of dominate a smaller team.

No one is on Nik. We knew the transition would be tough and under the big spot light of a D1 program it takes awhile to adjust. Arledge is a huge concern. I am stating now....his less than enthusiastic attitude is a concern. Douglas I think helps us the most when he returns because we get really small at the 3 when Bacote is out.

It's a bit early to go there. That would be like calling the Presidential election after that little town in New Hampshire votes.

There's a lot more to choose from than last year, and Jones has to have the time to figure out the roles when they are all available to him as opposed to playing against each other in practice.

Come on, it's a bit early to go there.

Agree, posted that in frustration either during or right after the game. Comment is valid, but it was just a foul fest exhibition game so we'll see.

At least we won and won comfortably. Two of our conference mates didn't fare so well in their exhibitions.

I like the depth on this team. If we can keep the defensive pressure up we can win a lot of games. It looks like we could have about 11 players in the rotation.[/u]

RE: Mt. Olive
How can you not root for Baker and Mosely; those guys come in and the energy just moves up a level.

Nik showed some skill, he's not a Larson/Harris type. I think he will certainly contribute off the bench. He was a little tentative last night instead of really pushing the pace, but he did get after the glass rebounding.

Bacote and Arledge seemed to be going through the motions; hopefully just bc its an exhibition game.

Palmore looked to be the most improved player on the team. I know Jones reamed him out for a defensive lapse, but he looks like he has taken his game up a notch.

Sam Harris was actually a much better player than he is currently portrayed. If Nik develops into a contributing member of multiple NCAA teams I will be enthused.

RE: Mt. Olive
48% / 50% from 3 / 38% FT - thats not going to stay at 38% guaranteed. Its was an exploratory game and we did pretty good. Freeman didn't even take a 3 - didn't have to, we all know he can knock it down from anywhere on the court.

JJ wins games, he adjusts during the game with the best coaches out there, now he has a lot of weapons and we will win a lot of games. Not always pretty and in steamroller fashion like some folks here want to see but this team will get better and better as the season moves along. Some days we will win from 3 some inside with Ross, Arledge, Douglas and Taylor. May not be pretty early on with Richmond, LSU and the Jam, VCU and Mason all in a row but if we are 4-3 or better heading into A&T game we are well ahead of schedule.

Havent heard much about Denzel Taylor. How did he look? I liked him last year and thought he had potential to be pretty good.

Denzel played a solid game. Still has a way to go on offense, but did an excellent job defensively and on the boards. He seems to have improved nicely, but it was a small Mt. Olive team so we'll see.

Do you think possibly Jeff Jones kind of had Aaron hang back out of the play, kind of like we felt Bobby Wilder may have done with TH in the Hampton game (as much as you can with a QB, like obviously not letting him run)? Jeff knows what he has with Bacote and didn't need him to do much to win, so it was a chance to see what the other guys could do without him.

You could tell Freeman and Bacote were being held back a little. Was impressed with what kind of game Freeman has. I hadn't seen him play before so I was somewhat surprised. He will be a mismatch for many PG's he goes up against as he has size and can hit the mid range jumper. We know what Bacote has already so Im not even worried about him. Arledge looked like he really didn't want to be out there. Overall it was pretty much what I expected. UNCW should be light work on Saturday. Richmond will be a very tough game following that though.

Still haven't seen Douglas play yet. Interested to see what kind of game he has.

Completely agree about Arledge. His attitude looked terrible. As far a Bacote is concerned, I think it is a little more complicated than him being "held back". Bacote scored a lot of points by dominating the ball and probing defense. I think he has a difficult role adjustment coming this year playing off the ball. I think he will be fine, but I don't the he will be our clear cut high scorer this year.

I agree. Freeman and Bacote did seem to be holding back a bit. However, I really like what I saw out of both when they chose to push the tempo. The only concern I have is that it appears that Freeman may struggle on defense with some of the quicker guards. But as has been noted several times in this thread thread; its just one game and an exhibition game at that.

Also, I don't think anyone mentioned the fact that Deon Clark looks like he might be a real contributer. IMO he looked pretty sound defensively and made some good choices with the basketball in limited minutes.

I think Clark is very fundamentally sound. Really pulling for him to get some minutes, tho I don't know from where
