The Dallas Cowboys might be one of the feel-good stories of the NFL so far this season, but they will not be a part of one involving defensive end Michael Sam.

Sam, who is aiming to be the first openly gay player to appear in an NFL regular-season game, has been waived from the team's practice squad, per various reports.

Sam signed with the Cowboys on Sept. 3 after the St. Louis Rams, the team that drafted Sam in the seventh round this past May, cut him following the preseason. The Cowboys even had sold Sam's jerseys in its pro shop as he tried to impress the team enough to promote him to the active roster.

That never happened. Now Sam, who spent the past seven weeks on the Cowboys' practice squad, is a free agent and will be joining his third team in three months if he lands with another club.

The hubbub over Sam's sexuality — and the perceived belief that it has roadblocked his path to the NFL — has quieted down since May, when he slid in the draft, and then again in August, when the Rams cut him following a three-sack preseason effort.

The fact that the Cowboys cut him more likely is related to Sam's ability as a football player and the teams' desire to add more linebacker and special-teams depth with Troy Davis, who worked out with the team on Monday and is expected to take Sam's spot on the practice squad.

Meanwhile, Sam's journey goes on, and it's difficult to project where or when he'll land.

No surprise, they only did this as a special favor to the leauge offices.

Honestly, if Sam couldn't find a spot with the collection of castoffs on the Dallas D line, then its going to be tough for him to make it anywhere. No other team in the NFL has more needs on the DL and rushing the QB.

Its not impossible for him, but this says a lot about where his abilities are at this level.

The Road block to him playing is him not being an NFL lineman.

And this somehow is news only because of his sexual preference. Had he kept it to himself like most normal people do about their preference, only a handful of people would even know about this insignificant event.

Hope he finds another NFL team to play for, but let's keep this about his skills or lack therof, national media! Thank you.

Why is this even a story. If not for his sexual preference he would just be another player who just didn't make the cut.

Heck, Mr. Irrelevant made the Texans and no one is publicizing that.

I wonder if he will try out for the CFL. That league is littered with lineman offensive and defensively with players that are "too small" to play in the NFL.

If he was just another player...there would not be a thread nor the above comments.

He's just not fast enough to be a linebacker and not big enough to be a lineman.

So being treated equally does not matter if you can get publicity from it. True equality will never occur as long as we keep having different rules for eacxh group.

When I saw the thread title, I clicked on it because I vaguely remembered I should know the name. I didn't even remember why till I read the post.

The most interesting thing I got from this thread was an article I found on increased fan attendance being dependent on more women joining the FB lovers ranks, which means advertisers are specifically targeting women. It has been decided that the male population has been tapped out.

But maybe the gay part of the male population hasn't, which might account for why a franchise might bring a gay FB player in even though he does not quite fit a need.

Who knows how those wily types think.
