RE: ODU: A Basketball School that Loves Football, or a Football School that Enjoys Hoops?
As mentioned above, hardcore basketball fans know/have known who ODU is.
However, outside of our regional umbrella, the casual fan likely had never heard of us, and if they did, more recently it was often as not, recognition from baseball announcers discussing Justin Verlander.......until FBS football.

Now, you can go just about anywhere in the country wearing ODU gear, and fans have at least heard of us.
Additionally, because of the football driven conference affiliations, our other sports have higher profiles as well. This is especially true of wrestling.

Unlike say UNC or a Duke, or even UMass, where the primary determinant for all things athletic is the health of mbb; as far as our university is concerned, this quote says it all.

I do like that we seem to be giving football AND basketball, indeed all sports, a lot of emphasis. In this respect our philosophy reminds me of the University of Florida.

I'll be in NY watching ODU take on Wyoming & Purdue at the Northeast Duals, while following the football on my phone. I wish the basketball team success, but won't be following. As for the VCU rivalry thing, I don't get it. But I guess that's because they don't have football or wrestling.

As well as many other universities.

To each his or her own, but I can't believe that is even in question. It would be one thing if we were 8-1 and had a shot at a decent bowl bid... While I hope nobody at the Ted spoils it and I can watch the football game at home on the DVR later, it would take an act of God for me to miss a game against VCU at the Ted. I hope we can still fill the Ted.

I guess football truly is king, and college basketball has become a one month sport. To be fair though, Im sure most people going to the game had it planned months before they knew there would be the VCU game.

It would probably by good also to remember that responses on a team's message board are such a small sample size that they are not necessarily indicative of reality.

Without a doubt, those of us who post on sports message boards are right up there with WOW fans and trekkies, but still I imagine if you were to poll both the campus and alumni they probably favor going to a football game over a basketball game.

I think that a both a result of how consumingly (and annoyingly for me) our obsession with football at all levels has become as well as college basketballs popularity taking a hit in the last few years.

The rise of ODU football coincided with a decline in ODU basketball. Football has that ready-made winning culture and excitement. It will take basketball a few years of solid play to get that back. I'd say we're a football school now.

ODU: A Basketball School that Loves Football, or a Football School that Enjoy...
If you have made the road trips to the Siegel Center every season, RIC Coliseum and NCAAT games in New Orleans and DC it is difficult to not have an allegiance to basketball.

Of my top 20 ODU memories, almost ALL of them are joyous or rip your heart out basketball moments. Those will take some time in football for me.

Football brings in the others who basketball could never reach.

Ive always wondered what portion of the local alumni were 'meh' about ODU athletics, but got back into ODU once football arrived. Purely my perception, but I always figured it was a significant amount if not over 50%.

It IS Taylor heinicke's final game, so that does make a difference.

I don't know how it is for the school, but i'm torn between the two to be honest. I didn't follow ODU basketball until I got here in Fall 09, but that so happens to be the same year we started football, so I'm on equal ground with both. Not to mention that our field hockey and men's soccer have been doing really well since i've been here at least, ranked at some point every year i think.

Yeah I will say one thing, when I first got here, even though football had just started, I couldn't wait until basketball season started. Now being in the band, gave me the opportunity to go the Coliseum every year and go to N.O and D.C, so at that time I'd say Basketball was my favorite. I'd also say some of my best ODU sports moments were basketball hands down, but once football started actually competing for stuff, it evened out for me.

I enjoy them both, but the campus scene, life, and community changed dramatically when football came. You must consider that.

I get over football losses much faster than basketball losses... I've shortened my life by a few days from the stress of watching CAA tourney games. When I stress out similarly with ODU football in a must-win, or die kind of situation, it will start to balance out for me.

I ditto how you feel after ODU losses, and stories like what appears in the links below don't make it any easier, but all in all, I feel equally excited by both programs.

I was looking at the ODU vs. Villanova game. Were the rules about 3 point fouls different then? Sessoms got fouled at the 3 point line. Was the 3 point line then the white line I saw? Did you not have to be behind the line, but only on it for it to be considered a 3 pointer? Just a random question.

It looks like they had an NBA line on the court also. The NCAA line was the red one. It was about a foot closer back then.

Loved all the videos. I don't remember Bruce Rader looking that young although I didn't arrive at ODU until a few years later. I was at the Virginia and Villanova games. My one and only TV appearance as a fan in the stands was at the Villanova game. About 50 people told me they saw me on TV. I have been trying for years to get a copy of the entire game. ESPN had an abbreviated version on TV years ago and I recorded that but have never been able to get the full length version. If anyone has it I would love to get a copy.

In the late '70s or early 80s, a very boyish looking and very slim Bruce Rader would sometime make an appearance at 4400.

You can buy a DVD copy on the NCAA website somewhere.

Also, someone, "Doctor" once posted a full link to the game...

My similar TV-moment was the UNC (#1 ranked) vs ODU at Scope thrilla where Stackhouse and Rasheed Wright (and Serge Zwicker and Dante Calebria), and Dean Smith rocked our halls. The highlight was Rasheed Wright blowing a huge two-hand jam. I rushed out of the student section to taunt him. Those were the days!
