RE: Sagarin ratings after week 8
Looking into the rankings it seems like the MAC being down is whats keeping the SOS' down.
Toledo's SOS propelled by 72 UNH(5-1 vs. 160 schedule ranking), 66 Iowa State(2-5 vs. 5th schedule ranking), 64 Cincy(3-3 vs. 60 schedule ranking), and 26 Mizzou(5-2 with 12th schedule ranking)

The MAC is weak this year with a lot of teams being very young and without really good QBs (there are a few exceptions, though).
Next year will be different. Teams will be much better and the QB play should be up a notch or two. (think Frohnapfel, Ely (UT), Johnson (BG), Terrell, Rush, etc.). QBs like Terrell will continue to improve and some injured QBs will return.
Two of the youngest teams in the MAC are UMass and WMU. They are both quite young and could be much, much better next year.

I haven't gone through MOST rosters (2-deeps) but if we did we'd find that this youth is more common then most would think among MAC teams.
Here is the UMass 2-deeps from last Saturday:
NO senior starters on offense (Frohnapfel has a 2nd graduate year next year). Two senior starters on defense.

And, of course, WMU is built offensively around Franklin, Terrell, Davis, Braverman, etc. (all underclassmen).

RE: Sagarin ratings after week 8
BTW, I'm sure someone will say Sagarins 'are just numbers' spit out by a computer, but I fear that our bowl season will be bad.
We are facing some David vs. Goliath matchups, even though we won't be playing Goliaths (Hope we don't get teams like Marshall, E. Carolina, etc. etc.).
To have a successful bowl season we need say one team ranked in the top 40, maybe two more in the top 60 and then the rest...

Speaking of Marshall, I have to wonder what the wisdom was behind scheduling NO P5 teams in their OOC slate. And in what looks to be a particularly hot year for them.

RE: Sagarin ratings after week 8
I'm hoping for top 50 finish. Sagarin is a lot on how many points you win by, and our offense is capable of scoring a lot. If The D takes advantage of some weaker offenses from here on out, we'll make a run.
Plus UNH could go undefeated, ISU could win a few more, Cincy shouldn't lose more than 2 games left on the schedule, with Mizzou a chance to beat some more good teams.... We're only 18 spots behind #50, with 3 more road games (which helps in sagarin if you win by more than the point spread).

RE: Sagarin ratings after week 8
What I hate, maybe UMass has a nice season and goes bowling next year and then it is splitsville.
Bad for the MAC and I'll take a gratuitous swipe at the UMass faculty:
Didn't they want to drop back down to FCS last year?
Like, I thought faculty members should be the leading lights, able to see what mere mortals can not see. Understand what patience means and how things develop over time, esp. from a bad start (when UMass decided to go from FCS to FBS, they weren't riding a high tide like Marshall).

All the hubalub from the UMass faculty is from a very small vocal minority led by one Prof who just likes to "be involved" and "see his name on quotes". Unfortunately it is that vocal minority whose message is picked up by mainstream media since negative news sells more than positive news.
UMass is in for a tough road but there is potential for another two wins this year which would put them at .500 in league play, (albeit perhaps an off year for the MAC). Based on the youth there is certainly a hope that they could contend for an East championship next year. From there is is certainly going to get interesting. Been a nice ride getting to know the MAC schools too bad it has to end just when the games were getting competitive.
One area that is very concerning is how a lack of conference/bowl tie in will impact recruiting. I for one am hoping that the immediate impact Coach Whipple has had on the offense can help offset the lack of a conference.
With 4 p5 schools on the non-conference schedule i am disappointed to see how low the UMass schedule is ranked. I thought just playing teams from the SEC/BIG would help more.....

The MAC is never picking up the phone. Travel costs in and out of Fargo aren't worth it.
