Game plan
One of the things I have really been appreciating with fleck is the offensive play calling. It has been both balanced and largely unpredictable. Hasn't allowed the opponent to sit on either a run or a pass, and the running plays seem to have a little twist to keep defenses off guard. Nothing completely out of the box, but also nothing that gives a defensive coordinator the opportunity to sell out much either. Today was the first exception to that though.
Today we committed to the run, and more particularly, running the clock. It frustrated me quite a bit at first, because they were too often predicable runs on first down, even when BG was obviously selling out on first down, and having early success stopping Franklin . Clearly the goal was to keep BG offense from being on the field, getting in a flow, and wearing down our defense. I think our offense is much better utilizing the pass game more, but I must say, this game plan was perfect for the high pace BG offense, particularly on the road.
I understand the criticisms that many have had with flecks style. I really do. But as I said before, he is certainly genuinly commited to his plan and the process. The kids believe in him, and so does this alum. There were questions about whether he could "coach the kids he is recruiting", and frankly I was waiting and praying that that answer would be in the affirmative too. Although the jury may still be out, he seems to be responding favorably. BG got out coached on Saturday.

Quite impressed with this weeks game.
Now we are getting back to more traditional Bronco outcomes. Finally.

RE: Game plan
I ride with brovol on this as usual.
1 thing from today's game that worried me a little with our play calling.
Braverman (or maybe it was Phillips) was sweeping across the formation as usual. When he crossed in front of ZT and Doak, a BGSU linebacker jumped the gap and blew Doak up for like a 7 yard loss.
That worried me at first, but there didn't seem to be a similar issue the rest of the game. What do some of you schemers think about the vulnerabilities in the timing of this offense? I love it.

Couldn't agree more. It's interesting because some commented that there must've been some good halftime adjustments during last weeks game against Ball State. There were some counter comments that most of us don't know what the halftime adjustments were, if any. From a technical perspective that may be true, I probably can't tell you what the half-time adjustments were, but the evidence is that two weeks in a row the Broncos have won the second half, so something is going right.

49-7 in the second half, on the road, against two pretty tough opponents. I will take those non adjustments any day of the week.

I know you're probably not asking me but I want to answer...
I thought our playcalling (runs only) seemed to be predictable at times. That was getting me frustrated, but I also understood it from a TOP standpoint. It was necessary (and worked) in the long haul.
I didn't really fault our play-calling on those option reads and sweep plays because I think a lot of those decisions are left up to Zach Terrell to read the defense and choose the right "option" (hence the name).
I think 6 or 7 times out of 10, Terrell made the right read. With more time and experience under his belt, he's going to make the correct reads more like 8 or 9 times out of 10. And that's when we'll be un-stoppable.
The interesting thing about this offensive playbook that I've realized this season is that it's more about limiting mistakes and playing smart, than it is skill of the quarterback in a lot of cases.
I think Chance Stewart really has his work cut out for him if he has any intentions of taking the job from Terrell next year. Terrell has done an exceptional job managing the offense through 7 games, and it's really his first year running it with the new weapons that he has (Franklin, Braverman, Phillips).

RE: Game plan
I think our play calling on the run was too predictable. If we knew we'd still get stuffed against a sub-par BGSU D, I think we would have mixed things up a bit in lining up and run executions, in the 1st 2-3 quarters. I think we had a sense of "we'll just cram it down their throats; who cares if they know exactly what we're going to do?" -- which didn't work Nearly as well as we would have thought. Getting 1-3 yards on said plays So many times, isn't good.
With that said, the overall Greater strategy Was good. Eat up clock, give our D rest, keep BGSU off the field. I think it's good to come away from the game realizing what-we-would-have-done-differently, so when we play another TOUGH offensive opponent (@CMU, NIU) -- we'll have learned something.

True. It's a no lose situation. The run opens up the pass, and when the pass starts working it stops Ds from stacking the line.

RE: Game plan
Love watching Franklin run, but worried about him getting tired and injured.
Like Terrell reads and running the ball, then getting down before he took a hit.
Franklin and the O-line are really special, and coaching is great!
Got to go to bookstore and get a RTB hat before Saturday.
