M of O game....what did we learn?
Here's what I learned....
1) our run game is back, but from D. Hare?
2) our young D has a lot of growing up to do
3) our secondary really has a LOT of growing up to do
4) our coaching staff doesn't do well with adjustments
5) we had 650 yds of offense and still had to hold on
6) is Carey really a HC?
7) no game is a "given" with this team, especially on the road (we only have 1 home game left)

your thoughts?

If you look at our remaining sched we don't really have a fun n gun type of team on our sched, so that's really going to help. Need to find a way to load up and stop some run games which I think we can do somewhat effectively. The teams that have the ability to set up the pass off the run are the ones that worry me ... Toledo for sure, WMU and maybe BSU to some extent.

I think you have to give Miami O some credit. You knew they were going to be able to sling it a bit against us but what happened is they were able to get a ground game going which really opened things up. Put us in a real quandary. Biggest thing though, and Carey said as much in the postgame, they got a few timely stops. Sometimes in maction like games that's really what you need out of your D.

I believe they can fix some of this but my goodness no more Anthony Brooks please...let the freshman take their lumps, way more upside.

Unlike other teams, we seem to run random plays with random personnel. The coaching staff needs to coordinate situations with the proper play and personnel.

The defense is brutal because the line cannot pressure the qback and the linebackers are non-existent against the pass. We just don't have a dominant defensive tackle or end to consistently disrupt the opposing offense, although I don't understand how the same personnel dominated NU.

We're 5-2, and we control our own destiny.

That's all that matters at this point.

RE: M of O game....what did we learn?
I rather enjoyed watching this game. Miami played tough and wouldn't go away but I never felt like NIU would lose because the offense showed no signs of stopping....it feels so good to say that about the NIU offense again.

What I think I learned (never stop learning...or changing your mind.): NIU is back in the MAC blob (which sucks but at least they are young?), the defense is nothing special (last week the run D was bad, this week the pass D was), there's hope for Hare (I really want this to be his breakout game. Yeah yeah, it was against Miami, but he played like Diesel's Patented Lawn Biscuits against Kent State and CMU and they're bad, so I'll take it) and the MAC is completely, totally, and crazily up for grabs.

After this one, I expect a lot of MACtion style shootouts for our Huskies and have no idea how they will go. Should be a wild ride that hopefully ends in Detroit but expect no predictions from me. This game is nuts.

We don't control our destiny.

Hare was awesome.
Maddie still can't throw.
What's up with all the injuries to key players
The defense is real bad
Play calling was much better

I hate the expression "controlling our own destiny." Destiny means nothing you can do will alter what happens. It's a bad expression.

CMU has 2 MAC losses. Toledo has none and NIU and WMU have one.

CMU lost to Ball State. If we win out, we go to MACC

When the QB runs the ball this offense works.

Hare is real fast or Miami is real slow.

I would hope the coaching staff reconsiders running Nickel for 80% of the game. Maybe there was injury issues, we don't know about. Typically a Nickel package has a series of LB and DB blitzes; didn't see any of that. Lemon is playing the LB spot Bass had, he never comes off the field; he and Folliard are two good blitzing LB's but I did not recall seeing either blitz much at all. Santa and Boomer would start the series, then come off after the first play. Peyton hardly played. Their QB played well, but defensively we really struggled, and some of it may have been scheme related.

We need to really work on eliminating costly penalties! Lemon's unnecessary roughness call kept a TD drive alive. Should have only been 3pts. It seems like every week there is at least 1 very dumb penalty.

Boomer is a running or short yardage lb, miami committed to passing and large chunk plays...if we were playing Army or Navy, boomer would have been out there all day

I don't think he's very fast, but he looked more decisive and confident against Miami. Showed some ability to make guys miss, which was good to see.

That's all that matters at this point.

Well, one shouldn't pay too much attention to controlling their own destiny 3 games in -- you point to that when there's 3 games left, instead. Especially in this wild-wacky MAC where anyone can beat anyone (minus EMU; unless they're playing a team whose coach is about to be fired).

Toledo is not as good as they were hyped. They are SO lucky they got by WMU (thanks Haldeman, our kicker; two short-range FGs missed + XP missed). Toledo's a good team in the MAC this year -- but no powerhouse.

Toledo has a bit of an easier schedule ahead overall. But they have to play AT NIU, as well as their I75 rivalry against BGSU near end of season.
NIU has only one gimme-game left (@EMU), but @BSU, Toledo, @Ohio, and capping it off @WMU is no picnic.

WMU: Needs Toledo to lose 2 (@NIU and BGSU)
CMU: Needs Toledo to lose 3 (@NIU, BGSU, and UMass or @Kent)

But again, too early to "say" at this point. Nobody's walking out of the MAC West with zero losses -- and there'll likely only be 1 team *IF THAT*, with only 1 loss. IMO, every team in the MAC West, right now, will lose (another) game on their schedule. So it's really -- who should I lose to? :)
