You don't say, the history books don't tell all of the story?

Though blacks now days in some cases (not all) tend to raise sand about a number of issues with no justification, these type of events used to happen all of the time and not even 100 years has passed (not to mention people who were alive when they happened) since these type of things took place. Rosewood, Florida, which had a Hollywood movie made about the massacre there, was another.

You can also read about how many interstates, as they were being built 50 and 60 years ago, routed through and broke up black communities. Any time black people tried to get something going, whites came and decimated it with rare exception (The Harlem Renaissance, for example of an exception), so it's easy for some to ask why blacks are on the lower end of the economic scale. It's a cliché that people don't want to hear because it sometimes comes off as (and is) an excuse for lack of self-responsibility but blacks have been held down historically.

The list goes on, although it's best not to harp on these things in all sincerity.

The current welfare system does a fantastic job of holding down ALL the poor, and blacks are unfortunately well represented there. Ending the "welfare trap" and getting blacks off the welfare plantation would be an excellent thing to do.

They see it as the reparations for previous transgressions.

Excuses need to stop for sure, however it doesn't change my point and that it's only been a couple generations since blacks could start picking themselves up after being held down and that there were far more wrongs in the past than just slavery.

I heard about this some years ago, but thought it was OKC. Never could find a reference to it again b/c a search for "Black Wall Street" is usually about stock market crashes.

This is certainly a tragedy, and one worth knowing about along w/ Freedmans Bank. Get some facts out there, and then we can stop w/ the incessant, nebulous complaining that pervade public broadcasting and what passes for academia these days.

The only problem with that is that you have to continue to live in poverty to get it. I will say however, for those that grow up in poverty, it's not as hard to just give up and stay and wallow in it. Something about not missing something you've never had...........

That's not the only problem with it. The welfare system constitutes a new transgression... I don't know how you apologize for giving money to generations of people. The worst part of it is the mindset of entitlement that comes with the current smorgasbord of social programs.

I don't remember exactly when I learned about the Tulsa/1920 riot. But I know that by the time I was 20-21 yrs old I had heard of it.

In my defense, growing up in Idaho made insulated me from a lot of mid to eastern US history. Most focus that wasn't political for my history classes was either international or western.

No excuse though. I was disappointed in myself (at 25) for not having heard of it.

If you are already poor and have been wronged or have parents/grandparents who have been wronged, it's easy to just say "I'm going to take all the free stuff that government is giving out since they legally discriminated against my family for centuries."

I completely disagree. The vast majority of people of all colors who use welfare eventually become successful, tax paying citizens.

Listen, I grew up in one of those poverty pockets that contain almost all white folks. It really isn't the mindset "I deserve free stuff because of my ancestors", it's "I'll take the free stuff because it's easier and I don't have to do anything."

Here's the point - to qualify for all that free stuff, one basically has to consign themselves to poverty and live the poverty lifestyle. A person has to choose to say, "you know what, eff it, I'll just live my life on the ragged edge - crap dwelling, beater $400 car, etc, etc.

It still amazes me how many choose it because it's easier and requires little to no effort.

.......and for far too many it is a generational way of life. I've lived in and around it and seen it.

Man I hope you're just trolling. A vast majority remain of welfare. That's how their kids learn how to live off it and become accustomed to such, therefore thinking that its ok, killing their desire to better themselves. Too much work involved in that.

Look up the statistics. Something like 80% use welfare for less than 5 years.

Being poor sucks. For the life of me I cannot understand how people can believe the myth that someone would actually choose to live their entire life in poverty.

First site I found says 26% stay on for 2 to 5 years while 20% stay on for over 5 years. Not that big of a difference, but that site also lists unemployment at 6% which means that they don't factor in those who aren't looking for jobs, so how trustworthy is the site I'm really looking at?

Well, you're mad at yourself for not knowing about this for 25 years. You sound like one of those creepy over-religious people in the Stephen King movies that get disappointed in themselves and beat their back until it bleeds. I mean, is it YOUR fault you didn't know about this? I didn't either, and I'm 35, and I don't give two popcorn farts, whether I'd heard about it or not, either way.
