In the last play of the game, Josh LaRocca was flushed from the pocket and didn't see an open receiver in the end zone. He played a great game but at this point was hurt and wobbling. Had he connected we would've tied.
Hatfield was asked if he would've gone for 2 after the TD but he said no. A tie in this case was as good as a win. We would've won the SWC outright and gone to the Cotton Bowl.
Outright, but with an Asterisk because I think TAMU went undefeated but was ineligible. I still don't think Rice would've finished ahead of TAMU, even with a win in that game.
Correct. And since we didn't play overtime in those days, it was the correct decision.
We finished in a 5-way tie for first at 4-3. A&M finished, 6-0-1, ineligible. Anybody remember who tied them?
That would've made Rice 5-2, assuming other results held, and it seems to me that Rice unexpectedly dropped a result late in the season - TCU or Baylor. TAMU would've been 5-1-1 to Rice's 5-2, so it would be very close to an outright title without an asterisk.

I wanna say that Jeff Venghaus played a role in the TCU game, but keep thinking he was running in from third when the ball hit off the backstop.
Venghaus caught a 2 point conversion inbounds, but the refs wrongly said he was out of bounds.

But you just have to know that they always have the zebras (and umps) playing for them. Personally, I am still not over the two roughing the punter calls in 97.
The Gardere call was horrific.
1997 was . . . . ughh
Ricky Williams was something else. I remember that game, it was on ABC.

We started with an "operation sellout" blowout loss to Air Force that was simply an awful effort on our part. To lay an absolute egg with the stands fairly full (53,000) was terrible and had to hurt marketing the brand going forward. Then the Texas loss, then laying another inexplicable egg at SMU (their first win over us since the death penalty IIRC). This is a team that could have been undefeated going to Utah instead of 6-3. Maybe we'd have won there if we'd been on that kind of roll.
That sounds very familiar.
