When did you become...
...a fan of your school?
Some of you became fans as a student. Some others became fans by supporting a spouse or other family reasons. Others may have been born into it.
Me? I became a TROY fan back in the 80's during the Div II days as a young preteen lad living in Philly, PA.
What's your reasoning??

Living in Philly? Wtf.
Early 90s. Because FSU was the best, I lived in Florida and my folks had no real college football allegiance to lead me astray. They weren'tl/aren't even that big of college football fans in general.

Fall of 1971, after getting out of the Navy, I had an Uncle start taking me to Louisville football games. I fell in love with the program.

I followed UM for as long as I can remember - just always loved the Canes nickname and teams since I used to be super into weather. Then I went to the []_[] (It's GREAT to be a Miami Hurricane!) and my love multiplied rapidly. I am now a huge fan of everything Hurricanes.

RE: When did you become...
I can't remember a time when I wasn't a UofL fan, it's been part of everyday life for as long as I can remember. My dad grew up on Floyd Street, a couple blocks from campus. He graduated from there in the late 60's. My brother and I both graduated from there.
I was born in 1981, one of my earliest memories was celebrating after we won the 1986 National Championship in Basketball. I don't remember the game at all, but I remember my family going crazy after the win.

RE: When did you become...
1975. I had little experience with sports before that. I had been to 1 high school football game. I tried to play little league baseball years earlier. Having a profound lack of athletic ability it didn't last long.
I was still in high school and we had just moved to Raleigh. A neighbor gave me tickets to see NCSU play. I barely had my license but managed game traffic without incident. We found our seats right on the 45 yard line but were quickly told we were in the wrong place. We were supposed to be in row J not row JJ. The guy offered to take the seats farther down for us but we said no.
The first half was not very much fun. I knew the basics of the game but not much more. The people around us kept standing up every 30 seconds. It was cool so I bought a wind-breaker at half time. I was prepared to leave but we stuck it out. The second half was a lot more fun. I got into the rhythm of the game. I began to feel the electricity of being in a crowd that large for the first time.
So yes, if I had gotten tickets to a UNC or Duke game I would probably be a fan of one of those teams now.

RE: When did you become...
When I was a kid, the first real FSU game where I really pulled for the Noles was the FSU-Nebraska '88 Fiesta Bowl
From then on, I was hooked on the Noles....I became a fan at the right time and got to see their run from the beginning
Years later, I ended up attending LSU, and got to see the beginning of their resurgence as well....
Between both schools, I've seen 9 National Championships played, with 5 Championships won.....I feel very blessed :)
I sort of feel like I've transcended being just a fan of a team, and become more of a fan of college football in general....
I certainly wouldn't mind seeing Mississippi State get to the playoff...its fun to watch teams have magical seasons

RE: When did you become...
I have been a huge sports fan since the early '50s. But since I grew up in New Jersey, there were no schools playing major college football within 150 miles, with the possible exception of Army who was still mildly relevant. So I've just been a fan of the game in general, without a specific team. When I moved to North Carolina in the 70's (my wife was a native) her extended family included fans of all three triangle teams plus ECU, so picking just one of them didn't seem to be the politically correct thing to do. So I stay neutral.

RE: When did you become...
I was born into it, a third generation ND fan. I have personally been a fan since 1964, watching John Huarte passing to Jack Snow on our little black and white TV set. I was seven.
My Dad (born 1900) and grandfather (born 1864, emigrated from Ireland 1882) both became ND fans when ND beat Army with the forward pass in 1913. They read about it in the paper, this tiny, unknown Catholic school beating mighty Army at West Point.
That did it.
All of my extended family (mother, brothers, sister, uncles, aunts, cousins, children, grandchildren etc..) since then have been ND fans.
None of them root for anyone else nor are any of them really interested in watching any other teams play football.
My parents chose a Purdue game in September 1939 for their honeymoon trip. That is where both of them wanted to go.
There are two more generations of ND fans behind me, so that makes five generations to date in my family.

Is that why it took them 18 years before they had you?
My parents were both NYC natives, and the most important sport for them in the fall was baseball. Dad was a "bum" and mom was a diehard Yankee fan, so they at least had hating the Giants in common. And you could count on all of them to be in a pennant race in September, and at least one of them to be in the World series.
I could have become an Irish fan when I watched Dick Lynch snap Oklahoma's 47 game winning streak, but they didn't really sustain excellence shortly after that. And I was kind of let down by their lack of aggressive play against Michigan State in a big game a few years later with a National Championship on the line.

When you are born in NC, you have to pick when you first enter Kindergarten and usually your parents make that decision for you.

I grew up in NC in a family full of ABCers. So naturally I loved the Heels since I first saw Carolina blue. My dad and sister went to WF, sister to Duke, another sister to NC State. Luckily, their bad influence did not rub off on me.

Yeah! A friend & I picked Div II teams from a sports magazine called Smith & Streets. I chose TROY, while he chose Valdosta State. I know it sounds funny, but when my parents moved the family to SC while I was a high schooler (c/o '90), I continued to follow TROY. Who knew I'd end up attending (BS c/o '94 & MS c/o 09). My buddy went to Michigan.

The George O'Leary days. Been many losses to UGAg, 7 win seasons, and anti-competitive academic policies passed since then.

I became a GT fan when I stepped on campus as a freshman in 1994. Let me tell you it was rough. That year GT went 1-10 and didn't have a winning season till 3 years later.

My earliest memory was being carted out of the carrier dome and to the emergency room. So I can literally say I have been attending cuse games for as long as I can remember.

I became a casual Pitt fan around 97/98, mostly because I despised PSU and ripped PSU fans every time Pitt played them back then. I really became a fan of Pitt when I attended a game, during the Fitz era, and never looked back. I got a plethora of frustrating moments as well as great moments.
