I know how a lot of people on this forum probably hate Rachel Maddow but if you get a chance, you should watch the first segment of last night's show.

She very clearly explains how what this disease does to you. It's extremely interesting.

You can see it on line.

Some of you people have watched way too much contagion.

This isn't the first time Ebola has been in the US, it wont be the last. It'll likely come in, infect 20-30 people, than disappear as we learn how to deal with it.

Again, of the 48 people who had direct contact with Duncan, without protection. ZERO have the virus, and the 21 days ends Sunday. Of the 76 health care workers who were in protective suits and handled his bodily fluids directly, TWO have the virus. And everyday we go without a new case the odds of them becoming infected decrease.

Every Ebola patient on average infects two other people. Usually those who are directly handling his bodily fluids, or are involved in clean up. These are people who are close to the patient when he sneezes, and odds are they might catch a stray particle.

We'll continue to work at solving the virus. There are clinical trials that are underway for a vaccine, and several different medications are being tested. Eventually, we'll figure out what stops the Virus. Until then, you're far more likely to die in a plane crash than you are to catch Ebola from a non-symptomatic Ebola victim flying with you.

The Hot Zone is a good read (read only, since the movie is a total joke and is nothing like the book) as well on the disease, which can get pretty nasty.

I'm not too concerned about this though to be honest. We've been through scares before (Mad Cow, Swine Flu, etc.) and we live in an age where we can communicate information quickly enough as to what to avoid and how to manage the infected people if it comes to it.

I don't know much about viruses, but it seems if someone has Ebola and sneezes on their hand, touches a doorknob, then I touch it a minute later...wipe my nose or my eye by habit...isn't that basically an airborne transmission?

You couldn't get Ebola from that sort of transmission. That's the Flu.

The person would need to sneeze on you, and then you touch your eyes or whatever and its in. The danger is that it takes one particle to cause an infection. So those people handling all the feces and vomit and whatever, if even one particle got on their isolation suit, and they then took that suit off the wrong way, they could get infected.

You're likely not going to catch Ebola from someone unless they are really sick. Flu can transmit from person to person without anyone being sick.

I don't believe so. For it to be "airborne", you'd be talking about small particle aerosol, whereas the transmission that you're talking about would be considered large droplets. I don't even think that CIDRAP has been talking about transmission via sneeze or cough - that would basically be saliva and mucous. When they are talking about aerosol transmission, I believe it would be projectile vomit or diarrhea. So, it's important to note that this discussion about airborne transmission hasn't even touched on the source of the aerosol. I don't think CIDRAP is disputing that it needs to be the same bodily fluids that the CDC was talking about. CIDRAP's criticism is directed at the CDC guidelines of what type of mask medical workers should be wearing. They are not saying that someone with a low grade fever will infect an airplane full of people by sneezing or coughing.

It's a terrible disease. Basically liquifies internal organs. It's dreadful. Having said that, good thing it's hard to spread and not airborne.

Correct, that isn't considered airborne. Lots of misconceptions out there, no doubt spread by the media.
