One of the first Iowa "straw polls" for the GOP candidates
is now out

And Romney and Carson are the front two (to no real surprise, IMO).

But when looking at the Favorables vs. Unfavorable measurements...

I just want to know how the hell Jeb Bush is +22 favorable to unfavorable?

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if Mitt was the man. There is nobody worth a **** on that whole damn list.

Not a fan of Romney. That being said I would much rather have him than the current regime and I am guessing a large portion fo the country feel the same way. He might as well run with the campaign slogan "I told you people this is what would happen."

Really?

I'd be happy with Cruz, Perry, Jindal, Paul, Romney, Ryan, or Walker.

I could accept Carson, Kasich, Rubio, Pence

I"d say "heck no" to Santorum, Christie, Bush, Huckabe and Portman

04-cheers

I know I would prefer him. It just isn't possible that things could be any worse.

We got Governors, Senators, Representatives, CEO's, scientist(?), Md's and several of them wear dual or multiple hats, like Rev AND Governor, or Prosecutor and Gov, or whatever.

What else does someone want? THE candidate? Someone 100% in lockstep with their "views"? Well guess what? Be prepared for a lifetime of being disappointed. Ain' gonna happen, probably never.

Better to accept a 70-80% candidate and hope they push more for the stuff you support, than to sit home and watch an utter disaster unfold like what we've witnessed these last 6+ years. MHO, of course...

The good news is that if Iowa says it you know you can ignore it. Being a popular Republican there is the kiss of death. Why anybody pays any attention to the idiocy coming out of that state blows my mind.

Ryan/Carson ticket. Hell a Romney/Carson ticket wouldn't be bad, Romney has been proven right in most of his assertions from the debates in spite of the media trying to paint him as incompetent.

JMHO: the Republicans are still searching for a post-GWB identity. Haven't found one yet.

This!!!

Too many people demand "everything" or they sit it out - which allows a much worse candidate to win the office.

Most Republicans think very highly of him, yes.

The poll was of 425 Iowans who claim they will "definitely" or "probably" attend the Republican caucus 16 months from now. What caught my attention was the foreign policy question, where 45% said America "should be quicker to intervene in conflicts overseas, as John McCain suggests" and 41% said America should "pull back current military engagements to be less interventionist in foreign policy, as Rand Paul suggests."

Out of those, I would probably only seriously consider voting for Portman.

Not sure why. What has he ever done other than lose a debate to of all people, Joe Biden.

Vouchercare has him drawing dead before his campaign even gets off the ground. Even if it were a good plan in theory (it isn't), seniors are never going to buy into such drastic reforms to their health care. He comes off as just a "numbers guy", with no actual ability to lead. He'd get less of the swing vote than Ted Cruz. Democrats would have a field day with some of his comments on entitlements (and you know how that riles up their base like nothing else), and I can also picture the likes of Rand Paul running him out of the room in a debate.

He just isn't a strong candidate, and I'd lean against him even running. He's much more likely to focus his time on becoming the Chairman of the Way and Means committee.

Another guy whose F/U I don't get is Rick Perry.

Ryan did well in that. The CNN poll found that he "won" the debate. I thought Biden seemed manic -- not a quality I'm looking for in a president, but whatever.

Quote:Democrats would have a field day with some of his comments on entitlements (and you know how that riles up their base like nothing else)
On the question of entitlement-spending, America has a rendezvous with reality coming rather quickly over the horizon. Most Democrats will seek to avoid that appointment for as long as possible. I'm thankful that Paul Ryan has injected a little bit of honesty into the discussion of that issue, regardless of the political fall-out.

Quote:I can also picture the likes of Rand Paul running him out of the room in a debate.
If Rand Paul can do that, then more power to him. He's never done it before.

Quote:[Ryan] just isn't a strong candidate, and I'd lean against him even running. He's much more likely to focus his time on becoming the Chairman of the Way and Means committee.
I don't agree about his being a weak candidate, but I do agree that his main political agenda right now is being Chairman of Ways and Means. He is probably the best person the GOP could have in that role.

Quote:Another guy whose F/U I don't get is Rick Perry.
Just to be clear, I don't want Rick Perry to be president. But despite his dud-performance as a candidate, Perry has been an effective Governor of Texas for nearly 14 years. Among Republicans (even if they're not from Texas), his ratings probably reflect that.
