Great Idea LS.

I'm BobL, recently turned 50 but feel much younger. I was born and raised in the NYC burbs. Moved to the Chicago burbs after my Soph year in HS. Spent a lot of time working in the poorer areas of both NYC and Chicago while in HS.
Spent my first 3 years of college at NIU before transferring and earning my BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
I have worked in consulting engineering since graduating, designing building systems.
I'm divorced with 2 kids, 18 and 17, maintained 50% custody, and have had no greater joy than being a dad.

I am a democrat (though I did vote for Bush 1 and would have voted for McCain had he been the GOP nominee in 2000). I do believe we should maintain a balanced budget(do not support a balanced budget amendment) I have a liberal definition of "general welfare" and a strong belief in personal responsibility( I do not believe they are mutually exclusive as some might). I was raised Lutheran though I am now agnostic. I believe that any religious extremism is a cancer on our society. My kids were raised Lutheran but also encouraged explore other religions and beliefs and challenge conventional religious ideologies.

I question everything, research a ton and then begin formulate my opinions. I encourage my kids to do as well(including questioning me and my opinions).

I have had NIU football season tickets since 1987, and my love for NIU Football is the one thing in which I have indoctrinated my kids.

RE: Introduce yourself here: Who are you? What do you do? What is your background?
Military brat... lived in most of the us and 2 countries... have traveled a fair amount to the rest of NA and much but not all of Europe for both business and pleasure.

Degrees in business/finance, computer sci and political sci

Spent 25 years offering financial advice to banks, insurance companies, trusts and wealthy individuals. 5 years in more general business consulting and the last 3 consulting for/managing healthcare.

2 kids in college... sole support for them. One in the arts, the other in math/pre-med.

Very involved in the arts.

As a military brat, 'religion' was far more generic Christianity... I was baptized Episcopalian, raised presbyterian, married a baptist so became a methodist. I've seen miracles work in my children so I have no patience for those who try to claim that what I've experienced isn't real, but I don't expect for them to have seen it or experienced it, especially not as I have... so I don't care how anyone reaches the point of being a decent person, so long as they get there. Arguing over pedantic details about translations of translations of what someone meant thousands of years ago is silly. Everyone gets the essential gist because most of what those things say, almost everyone in the world, including the non-religious, believe

I don't believe in legislating morality... and by that I mean forcing anyone to accept anyone else's choices... so long as it doesn't unfairly impact others. I think far to much money, time and energy is wasted arguing over whether the chicken or egg came first... The power to make others accept things that I agree with is the same power to make me accept things with which I do not... so that power should be reserved to only that which is vital... and 90% of the stuff we argue about isn't vital... not even close.

I consider myself an old-school, laissez-faire, local control Republican, but that isn't what most Republicans are these days... so I identify with libertarians, but not all of them or their ideas.

I am against public funding of abortions and pro-gay rights because
a) it's none of anyone's business what consenting people do together
b) it's none of anyone's responsibility what others consent to do together

I think there is plenty of money around arguing about abortion to fully fund abortions for everyone who needs one and can't afford one, and if there isn't, then lots of people need to check their 'responsibility meters'.

The minute you invite 'the people' into your sex life, or your finances or anything else for that matter, you lose control over that aspect of your life. Your right to something ceases to be unfettered when you require my help. If I choose to help you, fine. If the government makes me help you, I get a say.

I just don't see that these things are all that hard.

I'm a 2006 UNCW grad. Enlisted in the Coast Guard after graduation. Eight years later I've lived in CA (2x), Ohio, and VA (going back for round 2 this summer). I've been deployed internationally, and sailed places I never thought I would. I've loved every minute of it.

I identify as a conservative leaning independent.

Happy to be here.

I am uofmcamaro. I graduated from Memphis in 2007. No, I don't own a Camaro. I did own one when I was 16. Also, I do not have a mullet. I currently manage a bank branch for a large regional bank in the Southeastern portion of the country. Out of 1600 branches my branch traditionally ranks in the top 5 for our company. Yes, I am proud about that. I also, recently, began writing for a website (under the SBnation umbrella) covering Memphis football.

What else can I tell you fine people?

RE: Introduce yourself here: Who are you? What do you do? What is your background?
I'm Jay and I'm 52 years old. I grew up in the suburbs of NYC, except for ages 4 to 7 in the suburbs of Chicago.

I attended Bradley University (Peoria, IL) for my freshman & sophomore years. Then I transferred to UConn for my junior & senior years. I graduated with a B.S. in business/marketing. After graduation, I moved to Dallas and took evening classes at SMU for five years, finally graduating with a Master of Liberal Arts.

I've been in the insurance business since 1988 (investigating auto accidents, negotiating injury settlements, and handling lawsuits).

Most of those political surveys say I'm 80% conservative and 20% libertarian. I believe in small government, just like our Founding Fathers. My favorite conservative talking heads: Charles Krauthammer and Dennis Prager.

Miscellaneous: I shook hands with Ronald Reagan the day before he was elected president in 1980. I've been to one Super Bowl. My favorite vacation spots are the lakes up in Arkansas and Cape Cod, Mass. I'm 6'2", 275 pounds and always trying to lose weight. Golf is my main hobby. I was raised a Lutheran, although I haven't been to church in many years. I was a big partier in high school & college. Back then, the drinking age was 18. Those days are long gone; I don't drink anymore.

I sincerely like *everyone* here.

why not....

I'm nobody....

I'm like everybody else with an opinion and definitely not in 'that' 'one-percentile'

I don't watch the news....haven't since I was a tyke....

I'm gonna be 50 this year....

I was raised catholic and became an atheist at the age of 6....(out of respect for parents, refused to tell them 'all' until I moved out after hs)

I see now, what I saw then, and what was seen before...it's just a different spin today

the 'back-pocket' is all that has ever mattered...all that ever will until tech finally takes over....

I laugh at what the masses deem impotent <sic>...always have, always will....

the regime o'day will eventually bumble, tumble, and crumble upon itself.....if one has paid any attention to macro historical teachings, one should have learned that as the 'minimum' by now....

have fun boys....btw, make money so you can laugh.....it's much funner <sic>

Anyone should bear.

Constant over stimu-lation numbs me
but I would not want you
any other way.

It's not enough.
I need more.
Nothing seems to satisfy.
I said
I don't want it.
I just need it.
To breathe, To feel, to know I'm alive.

Finger deep within the borderline.
Show me that you love me and that we belong together.
Relax, turn around and take my hand.

I can help you change
Tired moments into pleasure.
Say the word and we'll be
Well upon our way.

Blend and balance
Pain and comfort
Deep within you
Till you will not want me any other way.

It's not enough.
I need more.
Nothing seems to satisfy.
I said
I don't want it.
I just need it.
To breathe, To feel, to know I'm alive.

Knuckle deep inside the borderline.
This may hurt a little but it's something you'll get used to.
Relax. Slip away.

Something kinda sad about
the way that things have come to be.
Desensitized to everything.
What became of subtlety?

How can it mean anything to me
If I really don't feel anything at all?

I'll keep digging
Till I feel something.

Elbow deep inside the borderline.
Show me that you love me and that we belong together.
Shoulder deep within the borderline.
Relax. Turn around and take my hand.

Well... I can't say a lot because I don't have a lot to tell...

I am sub-18 and started to read the forum when I was 16; I am 17, now. (I think this is a good argument to ignore my posts)

I am trying to study really hard this year to get access to the Navy.

Basically, this is it. I live lonesome the majority part of my time. Also, I am a stranger.

I'm Jay and I'm 37 y.o. I was born at UTK which explains one part of my fandom. I lived in Atlanta for most of my life until I decided to go to the Naval Academy. I graduated in 2001 with a BS in Mech Eng. I served on the USS RAMAGE, USS GETTYSBURG, FFGRON and C-RAM0702 before separating. I've been married for over 10 years and have 2 kids. I picked up an MS in Civil Eng in 2008 and currently work in the electrical industry. While Christian I am socially in the middle and fiscally conservative. All I'd really like to see is good governance.

Never noticed this thread until now. Always great to see people's backgrounds and where they're coming from.

I'm 37 and live in Naperville, IL (west suburbs of Chicago). Married for almost 14 years with 5-year old twins in kindergarten. A lifelong Chicagoan outside of the 4 years that I spent in Champaign. B.A. in Finance from the University of Illinois and J.D. from DePaul University. Currently work as senior corporate counsel for a large IT and management consulting firm dealing with a whole range of issues (i.e. technology solutions, cross-border transactions, mergers and acquisitions, intellectual property, employment). Huge Illini, Bulls, Bears, White Sox and Blackhawks fan. Pretty much bipolar from a political perspective: I'm a complete fiscal conservative (believer in small government, low taxes, adherence to free markets and open free trade) and social liberal (pro-gay marriage and pro-choice). Seeing some others' retirement plans in this thread, I'm planning for the day when I can spend the summers and fall in a condo in downtown Chicago and winters and spring in either Naples, FL or Scottsdale, AZ. (I REALLY love the beach in Southwest Florida, but the amount of cultural amenities in and around Scottsdale is greater, so I go back-and-forth.)

Born and raised in the strong liberal minded state of New Jersey. I'm a U.S. Marine and received my bachelor degree at Georgia Southern University in 2006. While at southern I became a conservative.

I've traveled all over the United States working for the government as a U.S. Park Service and Federal Bureau of Prisons employee. As I've become older and wiser, I will always declare myself as an independent. There's simply too much I disagree with both parties to align myself to a particular party.

I'm married with a child and reside in the tax burden, gun hating state of New Jersey. I love the state and all it has to offer. NYC 20 miles to the east, beautiful mountains 5 miles to the west, and Jersey Shore 50 miles to the south.

Love Georgia Southern and my Eagles! GATA

Grew up on a family farm. Newberry business school grad, now retired from a career in the fire service after being drawn to the profession while volunteering during college, yet have to work to pay my unfair tax burden. Fiscal conservative, slightly moderate socially, on the federal level I am a strict Constitutionalist......if it isn't specifically spelled out for the federal government then it isn't a federal requirement.

Don't particularly give a damn if fags marry.....I figure they'll pay for their sin on judgement day. Don't want my children being indoctrinated by the government that homosexuality is "natural" because if it were natural then there would be a path for two homosexual beings to procreate.

I figure I must be privileged according to the narrative. I'm a white male who votes conservative yet I'm willing to bet good money that unlike the leftists on this board I know that I have more open invitations to black churches, family functions, etc. I'm proudly the godfather of six black children and am more than willing to fulfill that responsibility. One is the daughter of a childhood friend, the rest are the children of guys who worked under me. My oldest was the godson of my first Captain....a black man. Go figure.

I believe in helping your fellow man, but working in the profession I did I have seen how so many abuse the welfare system the leftists love so much. We need mandatory drug testing and legitimate proof of job searches in our social welfare programs. When you spend 20 years voluntarily working to protect the "poor" like they did and the VAST majority live a better life than you do there is am f'ing problem.

I've tried several times to get with the libertarian movement but every time I do they go off the reservation so far I can't get behind the national party because they are a bunch of morons.

Never voted straight ticket, but the only dims I have ever voted for would at best be called "blue dogs". They are a fossil.....I would rather the modern dims just admit they are socialists and be done with it.

That's who I am. Piss on you if you don't like it.

Blazer4Life14 here: Turn 23 on Thursday. Born in Sumter, South Carolina, raised in Knoxville TN, then moved to Birmingham for college. Just graduated in April from UAB with a degree in Economics. Currently interning with a professional baseball team, but looking for a full-time sales job in the sports industry. I'm passionate about the Miami Dolphins, Toronto Blue Jays, Everton and UAB Blazers. I'm a MLB, NFL, and EPL junkie. I'd describe myself as socially liberal and super-conservative on economic matters.

I do a lot more reading than posting on this board. I simply like to read both sides of whatever argument is taking place.

26 y/o who grew up in Northern Idaho. Received my B.S. in Psychology and M.S. in Human Factors and Ergonomics from University of Idaho.

Work as a Software Product Manager at a company that designs and deploys security systems.

Hobbies: I normally bike 6-10 hours a week, but my foot is broken so I'm couch ridden. If I'm not biking, I'm hiking, kayaking, lifting, or playing games.

Politically... I'd vote Republican 100% of the time if it wasn't for a few key social issues. Separation of church and state, gay marriage, and certain scientific issues. I've voted for libertarian candidates in the last two elections.

Introduce yourself here: Who are you? What do you do? What is your background?
I'm a 30 year old Texan, though I was born in Kansas but have been here 29 years. I graduated from Texas St in 2007 and work as an environmental consultant in the energy, oil and gas, petrochemical industry.

I am a moderate and never vote straight ticket. I try to not vote just because it's good for me but because it's for the greater good. I'm probably more liberal with social issues. Don't care if you are gay, black, immigrant, or tea party. As long as you live by the golden rule you are good with me.

I'm getting tired of seeing the divide the Internet allows politics to create. Too much is yes or no, black or white, or thinking that the exception is the rule (ex: people on food stamps eat crab legs so no more food stamps). i have friends all over the spectrum of beliefs and at the end of the day we are friends. I love that people have their own beliefs that's what makes this country great. Saying inside should move out or whatever is just plain stupid. Embrace diversity but not discrimination.

This thread is old, but I've only recently started coming here so I'll throw out my bio too.

I'm 37, married with two boys who are 12 and 8. Recently moved to a suburb of Atlanta, prior to that had lived 21 years in Statesboro, GA (home of THE Georgia Southern University). Bounced around as a kid doing 5 years each in Ohio, Michigan, and Nevada before we settled in Georgia. I work in higher education administration on the financial side, and have previously worked in local government doing the same kind of thing. My dad is a college professor and my mom is a retired librarian, they are pretty big liberals and raised me that way. I have definitely moved to the right of where my parents are, but not a Republican, I identify as an Independent. I'm pretty liberal on social issues, more conservative on fiscal ones; I generally just want political leaders who will work together and compromise to get things done that help the country (what a pipe-dream right?). My hobbies are keeping up with Georgia Southern athletics, hanging out with my family, and trying to be active and live a healthier lifestyle (mostly unsuccessfully).
