Question for App State Basketball Fans
We're about a month away from the beginning of basketball season and Ohio will be hosting App State for their season opener on 11/15. I know a little about your FB team but don't much about your basketball team, what are your expectations for the team, will they be competitive in the Sun Belt, what are the players opposing teams should be worried about, etc?

Thanks.

I'm not an App fan, but they'll likely be picked last in the SBC, and are postseason ineligible because of APR. Previous coach destroyed their program Orlando Early style.

You will win, Capel was a train wreck, talked to some of the veterans and they are very enthusiastic about new coach, 100% better, that being said, I expect this year to be at best slightly better then last meaning an average basketball team will probably kill us. Lot of work to be done in Boone for this sport.

Destroyed the program is an understatement. Houston Fancher had a loaded team coming back for the 2009-10 season but was run out of town by a couple of meddling high roller alumni wanting to bring back their Chapel Hill Boy Buzz Peterson. Buzz took the team to a 24-13 record, lost by 1 in the conf tournament championship game before winning 2 games in the College Insider Tournament. He promptly left for more $ and the same donors replaced him with another Chapel Hill grad Jason Capel. Capel had 1 year experience as a third assistant at App. Anyone with half a brain could see this train wreck coming. He took a 24-13 team with 12 returning players - 3 starters - one the returning conference POY - plus the addition of a Big South POY transfer and promptly went 16-15. In four years he was 56-70, with two seasons 1 game over .500. The last year was an abysmal 9-21.

If Fox can just get these guys to play some defense, cut down on turnovers and hit a higher % of FT's we could be decent. He has some talent to work with, but most of it is relatively young. There are 5 scholarship freshmen on the roster, 1 Soph, 5 Jr's and 2 sr's. Best players are a 6-7 225 5th yr Sr forward, 6-8 225 Jr forward & 6-3 185 Sr guard.

That's not fully Orlando Early style, but its close. If Early had continued at Monroe much longer the NCAA might have had another death penalty test case.

Warhawks hired a very good coach to replace him, and it took him three seasons just get the team up to 6th in the league.

Henceforth and forevermore a head coach that nearly destroys a program will be described as "pulling an Orlando Early"

RE: Question for App State Basketball Fans
thanks for the info guys. Sounds like you've had a rough streak but hopefully this new coach can get you back on the right track. Ohio is breaking in a new coach this year as well so we're optimistic but anxious to see what he can do too.

If anyone is thinking about making the trip to Athens to see the game I think you'll enjoy it, there tends to be a good crowd for the season openers, should be a fun time.

If you don't beat us this year, Lord help you; but it you play us in three years that may not be enough.

One thing I forgot to add. When Fancher was booted from the program the team carried an APR in the 980's with a high of 991. When Capel was let go we were at 922 and made ineligible for postseason play.

RE: Question for App State Basketball Fans
What's amazing is that you could find 5 App State basketball fans. Hopefully our new coach can turn around the dumpster fire of a program that he inherited. Give him 2-3 years and I think App will be competitive in the Sunbelt. This year expect a small team that plays very hard on defense and lacks lots of scoring ability, especially on the inside. Coach Fox is teaching these kids fundamentals that have been lacking for the last few years (like how to make simple free throws, set picks, and get the ball up court under pressure), none of which the team has done under the past regime.

I have a lot of confidence in our basketball coach Fox every time I hear him.
Wish Coach Satterfield always gave me the same confidence.

You're right about lacking size and ability to score in the paint, but I could see us wetting some threes and jump shots. We're working with a lot of mini-Davidson white boys who can drain some shots.

I don't expect much, but I'm excited for inevitable improvement. Jason Capel was one of the worst coaching hires in NCAA Basketball history.
