This is funny. Maybe Buffalo can hire the Sherminator as their MBB HC

I hope they didn't hire a search firm.

WHy would anyone hire that guy as a head coach (interim or otherwise). They could not have made a worse choice.

I saw that blurb and name on the telly late last night, but only for a second and didn't feel like running it back to make sure I wasn't hallucinating. all I could thinks was, I wonder if that's the same...
Wow. He bounced around the NFL for a while, now he lands another HC job, if even only interim. Wow. Just wow.

Wig-e-d! He was a lousy freaking coach. Awful hire by Carrier. It set the program back 10 years, easy. I'm glad I got two years under Rip, so I could experience, if not the best, at least one of the two best coaches at JMU.

RE: Alex Wood is interim coach at Buffalo
I thought he'd eventually be back to the college ranks, so it doesn't surprise me. Those were some miserable football days at JMU. I actually feel pretty bad for Buffalo. They are in for a miserable next couple of years... if that long. Hopefully they'll be able to recover as we did.
For anyone complaining that we barely get 20k at games... we have come a LONG way from that era where we rarely had a sellout, and lucky to have a half full stadium at Old Bridgeforth.
And then Mickey came along...

Without a doubt, the worst coaching hire up to that point in our history.
Many would say the Dean Keaner hire was even worse.
Brady is likely in the conversation if we consider character/integrity

Any good stories from his 4 years for those of us post-Wood? I started with MM in '01

A couple fond memories:
- JMU scores a go ahead TD with about one minute on clock. Wood kicks and extra point to go up two rather than go for two to go up three. Players protested the decison but Woods insists. The opposing team, i think Richmond, then drove down the field and kicked a FG to win the game in final seconds.
- Wood inherits probably the most talent ever at JMU (Macy Brooks, Mike Cawley, Ed Perry) and goes to App State for the first round of the playoffs. Rip Shearer attends the game to see his old players - Wood does not let the players talk to Rip.

No.
True story: Only good story was when Alex Wood was gone (short of a handful of exceptionally talented guys he managed to lure to JMU).
Alex Wood burned 99% of JMU's recruiting bridges chasing recruits from across the country and transfers rather than building a program with balanced classes and and some local (mid-atlantic) talent. He couldn't relate and in turn his players didn't pay him any favors performance wise. See MM's first season results vs Woods last (99 vs 98) with very much the same cast.
The damage he did directly contributed to MM's struggles after what talent was inherited graduated (see 00-02').

RE: Alex Wood is interim coach at Buffalo
Wig-e-d was out of his league as a head coach. He used the football team as a welfare program. What do i mean by that? Well, I'll tell you...
There were several players on the 96 and 97 teams that were walk-ons at the beginning of their careers that had earned partial scholarships through their playing ability under Rip. Those same players went from the two-deep to 2-year starters at crucial positions. They were not awarded full rides when scholarship money was available. Rather, Wig-e-d gave the scholarship money to guys who played sparingly at best because they came from more difficult family circumstances. Sport is the only thing in our society that is based solely on ability and Wig-e-d took that away from guys because of his twisted, subjective standards.
He was condescending, near-sighted in his strategies, moronic in his offensive staff hires, and disrespectful to his own staff.
Oh yeah, he was also a total d!ck!
Here's a sad, yet good story about the brilliance of Alex Wig-e-d Wood. For some damn reason he thought, regardless who we were playing, that we could run a speed option into the boundary on 4th and short. We did it against App State in the 95 playoffs when Dexter Coakley was a senior LB for ASU. Needless to say, Coakley stopped Kelvin Jeter for a 2 yard loss. Result turnover on downs at a crucile point in the game.
Wig-e-d got out coached by just about every coach he ever competed against. In 95 and 96 we won games on shear talent brought in by Rip. Hell, in 95 we were preseason ranked as high as 3rd in the nation. We made it to the playoffs but barely. Just about every game we won came down to the last possession with Macey or Jay or Ed or Mike making a great play to put us over the top. 95 was a huge waste of talent.

RE: Alex Wood is interim coach at Buffalo
The one memory I remember came towards the end of his tenure. We had a starting QB that Woods didn't care for anymore. His way of getting rid of the guy was to make him a WR- a position he had never played, so he quit the team.

Minor detail...I believe (if my memory isn't playing tricks) it was a move to TE...but the result was the same. Starting QB to TE/WR...player leaves.
