If you disagree with Citizens United, how do you feel about
newspaper endorsements?

The people who have their panties in a wad over CU, rail over corporations influence in elections. They tell us "corporations are not people." And they'll argue that corporations should not be buying advertisements for a candidate or issue.

But what about newspaper editorial endorsements? All newspapers (I don't know of one that doesn't but I suppose there could be one) provide election endorsements on their editorial pages. Those in favor will no doubt site the first amendment "freedom of the press". But, virtually every newspaper today is a corporation. Heck Warren Buffet owns my local paper.

So aren't a corporate newspaper's endorsements logically equivalent to a corporation funding an ad in the same newspaper?

Of course they are equivalent. And the editorial commentary on cable outlets like FOX or Comedy Central is like a corporate donation, too.

But, what's worth far more than attack-ads or newspaper endorsements is the slanted "reporting" on shows like "CBS Evening News" or "Good Morning America". It's more valuable because it's packaged as "objective reporting" even though they almost always have their thumb on one side of the scale.

Ahhhh...yes....the old main stream media bias canard. 03-yawn

But yes...those newspaper editorial endorsements are garbage. They're only done to sell newspapers. However, it's different than the CU which unleashed loads of untraceable money going directly to candidates. That's quite a bit different than the opinion of some newspaper editor that hardly anyone takes the word of.

I don't have any objection to corporate/union participation in politics, per se, because it's essentially groups of people exercising their First Amendment rights together, in order to get a bigger bang for the buck.

But I agree the donations should be readily traceable. We should be able to determine, in a timely manner, exactly who is footing the bill.

Right...CU allowed it to be too easy to funnel dark money. And both sides use it.

Citizens United had no effect on disclosure requirements. It only involved spending.

Citizens United also did not create the Super PAC by eliminating contribution limits for independent expenditures. That was Speech Now, a DC Circuit decision.

So the newspaper editorials are only done to sell newspapers, but hardly anyone cares what the editors say. So do they sell more newspapers or not? 'Tis a puzzelment.

The left is okay with freedom of speech and freedom of association as long as you spend your money on their speech and associate the way they tell you. Citizens United gave people the ability to move away from those restrictions...thus, the lefties hate it.
