Credit card/bank account fraud
Seems to be a lot of that going around now even more so than I have seen in the past.

I have had several friends that have had issues with their credit cards being used. One friend recently had someone make up new checks using his bank account number and routing number but with a different address. The bank apparently never caught it until his account had been emptied.

Anyone here had problems?

RE: Credit card/bank account fraud
I have had a couple of problems. A few years ago I was commuting between Dallas and Memphis quite often. My wife noticed a charge on our debit card for a Nail Salon in Memphis and she just assumed I had bought something for our daughter. Well it kept showing up on the same date every month. We looked it up and it didn't exist. The bank investigated it and eventually gave us our money back but they never solved the issue. They just mailed us new cards with new numbers, which was a pain to go to all of our online accounts to change but it only took an hour or so.

Fast forward a few years, we are in Destin on vacation, have paid for the room, food, golf and everything else for a week. On our way home we stopped at one of the casinos in Shreveport and they flagged our card. I got on the phone with the bank and the guy just wanted me to confirm some of the places we had been the past week.

It was a hassle but I guess it was good to know they were watching.

Target, Home Depot and a few other places that probably all of us have shopped have had breaches, so who knows what might happen down the road.

The bank caught it. Within the hour, they had put three charges of 750 on it.

There is always someone on the inside. The episode I told of regarding the nail salon in Memphis was probably someone working at Dillard's or Macy's and they held on to a copy of my receipt. To think that someone is contacting a guest as soon as they check in is really bold.

I would think that, too, but he's a somewhat famous person and tweets where he is all the time, so many knew he would be there.

RE: Credit card/bank account fraud
This is why you have to shred all sensitive mail, anything with your bank account, address, etc. on it. Plus, countries like China and other countries are paying hackers to do things like this to steal money from Americans. These hackers can extract this info in many ways.

A lot of what is going on is called pocket surfing. Just look at this video to see how easy it has become to acquire your numbers and personal info while you are out in a public area like a mall.

I had my company credit card # stolen in Chicago last month. Spent $2000 at strip clubs and Target before maxing it out. The only way they found out was when the statement came in.

Did you hear what the FIS SVP said regarding the RF cards they manufacture?
"The most important thing for us is convenience to the consumer."

RE: Credit card/bank account fraud
I still push debit and/or credit cards every day at work. Even though this stuff can happen it is still so much easier for a consumer to fix than if it were a check account or cash stolen.

RE: Credit card/bank account fraud
There is a way to avoid being cleaned out of your bank accounts. Use a debit card you buy at any retail, put a designated amount to purchase things. And, when someone hacks it, they can only take out the balance of your temporary debit card.

Banks already have point of sale debit limits on your card

Now that's funny.
I got called the other day by the (Indian) "Windows Technical Staff" re: viruses on my computer. I'm thinking to myself (it's microsoft not windows), when they asked me to sign on to my computer,I said sorry no and hung up.

It is amazing how clerks where shop think they can get away with selling your number out. i guess they don't catch and fire very many of them.

And daily limits as well.

Someday there will be a giant class action lawsuit against one of these retailers that allows information to be compromised. That's the only way the big boxes will spend what is necessary to fix the problem - when it's cheaper to protect the data than to pay for the losses.

I don't foresee a scenario like that though. I mean, the only losses are a little inconvenience of time (having to file fraud paperwork at your bank)...and really that is it. I mean, you get your money refunded to you so the consumer never really takes a loss. What would the suit be for? And to be fair, companies spend a ton of money to keep their stuff secure. Sometimes a inside job compromises the info...and those people are fired. But in the cases of Target and Home Depot (recently) there is almost nothing the companies could have done. The people hacking these systems are so good it isn't a matter of if they get in...but when.

The banks take the losses. Not only do we have to replace the money that was taken, we have to reissue debit cards that may have been compromised. The banks would have to file class action. It's coming, I just don't know when.

You were smart. I work at Microsoft, they never call a residential user, ever.
