CBSsports: Playoff Mock Committee Exercise
CBSsports was invited to a mock run of exactly what the playoff commitee will be going through and what will be used

http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball...-decisions

things to note:
-Margin of Victory is irrelevant
-yardage information will be huge
-SOS is basically an eye test
-Data from other sources arent used and discouraged from being brought up

So, essentially, they're going to do it by the eye test. Great. Not.

RE: CBSsports: Playoff Mock Committee Exercise
as far as marshall and ecu

marshall hanging its hat on dominating teams is irrelavant and that data wont even be used

but the yardage will help them to an extent, the biggest stat they talked about is point scored and points allowed versus your opponents average..i thought this would be huge for marshall but upon furthr inspection most of marshall opponents are givng up crazy amounts of points a game, it will defintely be a plus for them but not a big as yod think..

and ecu at this point will be even, unc is probably holding them up but usf and smu are probably bring them down.

and the biggest ECU boost and huge dagger to Marshall is that SOS is an test, their is no SOS stat or SOS measurement like rpi or anything, you are supposed to use the stats to try to come up with your own sos ..basically meaning its an eye test.... and marshall's whole schedule loses in that regard

So you get "bonus points" for yardage but no "bonus points" for margin of victory? That makes no sense.

Yes, and it overlooks the fact that some teams rack up lots of yards and play good defense but are unable to score touchdowns.

and this is why college football will ultimately lose so many fans like me.

eye test for SoS? really?

take some lessons from the NCAA committee please - and use analytics.

I feel like this selection committee is designed solely so to pick the teams who are "best" for TV and not really have to base that on any tangible factors.

they are using analytics but non ranking sos, like rpi from the Bball committee, but for you to decided yourself.. from other stats from the 23 available stat categories..

i think the point of that is blowing out a team that gets blown out often shouldnt be reward, nor should running up the score, nor should style of play, baylor can run up a score 10x more than a Michigan state that doesnt mean they are better...

im not sure why the heavy use of yardage information, but like he said in the article only few used that, the stsat many used were the "how you did versus your opponents average"

They are the defending national champs, have a return Heisman, and are undefeated. They absolutely deserve to be in if they win out.

Of course it's an eye test. Data would make it too hard to be corrupt.

Them using the "eye ball test" for SOS is another huge reason why ECU's schedule looks way better than Marshall's. All the eye ball test for that really means is what's the name on the front of the jersey. ECU has played and beaten some teams with the right name on the front.

That seems logical, but in reality, the committee is setting itself up to make whatever decision it wants, w/o having pesky data to back it up.

Unlike the NCAA committee, this one is going essentially on the eye test. And using yardage stats is even dumber than using scoring differential.

I really don't like the way this seems to be headed.

I agree long term, just in the short term I believe the way they are setting things up will favor ECU vs Marshall for this year. You are right though they are doing it this way so for the playoff they can put whoever they want without having to use real data to back it up.

That was all last year. Have you seen the SEC west lately?
