66% of NIU freshman and first-year transfer students go home at least once month*

But I agree there is a problem...its always been this way at NIU though. I'm not sure a university located in DeKalb will ever change that.

I'd imagine it will get worse as the suburbs come closer. The only way to stop it would be to increase out of state enrollment, namely from Hawaii

Ive notice that this year, it seems the freshmen are going home less and less. I think we have a good freshmen class.

NIU is going after the overseas students...mainly from Asia.

Close to Chicago, suburbs, kids want to work. Can they get into bars at 18?

I am not sure how this differs from many other campuses. I think this article brings nothing to light.

BTW.....

I would say everyone likely goes home once Sept/Oct. Nov for Thanksgiving, December is break, doubt many home in January-March, guessing most go home once. April is Easter, May school is out.

So really, I would guess it isn't out of the ordinary. And some are gong home to be with hs gf/bf, friends who didn't get into college., or even meeting ones that did back home. Again, not a surprise.

I can see it now. A DL of 400-lb. Samoans and a D backfield of tall (but not too thin) fleet-footed sprinter gazelles from Ethiopia - who happen to also be master tacklers. Time to wake up.

Speaking from experience, I would go home at least once a month because I wanted to see my family and especially my grandparents, because I didn't know how many more times I would get to see them in my life.

That's certainly a good reason. I did the same.

Since the average student at NIU does not come from a rich family, they often need to go home on weekends to work. I had a job right after high school where they let me work my own schedule on weekends whenever I wanted. So, I would often come home on non-football weekends and work to make a few bucks and help my parents cover my incidental expenses.

My senior year I started working more in my parents hometown as a neighborhood watchman, so I would go home every couple of weekends. Sometimes you need to go home for important reasons.

Once a month is a huge improvement over what it was 10-15 years ago.
