Mississippi State No. 1 in AP poll
Mississippi State No. 1 in AP poll
Updated: October 12, 2014, 2:12 PM ET

Mississippi State is the new No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll, replacing Florida State and making the fastest rise to the top spot in the history of the poll.

The Bulldogs received 45 first-place votes from the media panel Sunday. Mississippi State beat Auburn 38-23 on Saturday, its third straight victory against a top-10 team. The Bulldogs are the first team in the poll's 78-year history to go from unranked to No. 1 in five weeks. The previous mark was six weeks by Ohio State in 1954.

The Bulldogs were No. 3 last week, tied with Ole Miss, for their best ranking. Ole Miss stayed at No. 3 this week, two points behind No. 2 Florida State, which beat Syracuse on Saturday.

The defending champion Seminoles had been No. 1 since the preseason. Florida State received 12 first-place votes and Ole Miss three.

Baylor and Notre Dame round out the top five. The Fighting Irish play at Florida State on Saturday. Auburn fell four spots to No. 6.

I hate the SEC and like many, I'm tired of seeing them in the national title picture...but I'm rooting for Miss St. Those guys suck and never have anything to cheer about and this is legit.

During the Jackie Sherrill era they were up and down, and he inherited a bad program in 1991, but got them turned around. Croom did not do much of anything, but Mullen will be going to his 4 bowl game in 5 years this season. They have not been elite by any standards, but sucking would a big stretch.

I said after week one that Miss St was the real deal.
Thus far I couldn't have been more right.

They've always had good defense and Mullen finally has a QB to execute his offense. State believed in him and patiently stayed the course for 6 years leading to this dream season.

State has some of the most loyal fans who stayed true through some very bleak years of getting pummeled. Very good to see them rewarded for their loyalty.

Go State!
Eggbowl is always a great game but it's going to be epic this year.

I hope that would be the case. Often that game decides a bowl bid this year it could decide who wins the West.
