RE: Get a Grip
They are not a cupcake but the TO's are the reason we lost. Houston's defense live on stripping the ball.
On another note concerning the clock stopping; it did stop but once the referee set the ball down it starts back up. Houston waited and called a TO before the clock ran out.

I hate we wasted a timeout to contest a on field decision that the referee never reviewed. At the same time Houston's QB fumbled a snap that could have been a gift for our Tigers.

Houston is a not very good team. 5 turnovers and we still have a shot to win in the end. We played poorly and lost. We're not good enough to overcome a really poor performance.

What proof do you have that Houston isn't a good team?

If losing to UTSA 27-7 is not evidence, then you will accept no proof.

A bad loss does not make them garbage when they took BYU and UCF to the wire

Bad losses to stinky teams are more telling then close losses to good teams. Please see Rip Scherer.

RE: Get a Grip
The truth is Houston is very close to us and statistically ranked 1-2 most defensive categories. They lost close games to BYU and UCF. UCF when Ward fumbled at the one footline. They were a TO away from beating UCF and we have been one turnover away from different games in all three of our losses.
Looking back on our excitement over the Cincy win, it's not that good of a win. They are so bad on D it might cost TT his job. Maybe not this year but they were bad last year on D and there is no sign of improvement.
Thursday night I asked several of our players what the difference was between UCLA and ole miss. They all said speed. With Houston, Ward who we recruited hard, beat us with speed.
We should have won. We have to fix our TO problem. Our OL can't move out really good DLs and Houston has two, losing DD hurt and as much heart as Craft has he can't be our RB Between the tackles vs decent defenses.
We have come from one of the worst teams with the fewest numbers and least talent around to a very respectful place in our league. I think most of knew 10-2 was not rational. There is not enough distance in the second tier of our league to elevate us to that level.
Like it or not, Houston, ECU, UCF have out recruited us consistently and in close games it comes down to coaching and athletes making plays. The coaching was even and they made plays. We lose.
More fun games ahead. Keep supporting the team and don't blame them for fandom unrealistic expectations. We will go bowling in a year when most people thought 5 wins would be progress. Be disappointed with any loss but keep the faith. The team needs fans not wagon jumpers.

RE: Get a Grip
I'd say that not even a majority of posts last week said we would win out the rest of the season. Most said we'd lose 1 or possibly 2 more. There was some optimism about 10-2, but 8-4 to 9-3 predictions seemed to be at least as common.
So in that sense, not much has changed from a few days ago. So why the gloom and doom?--I guess it's the sloppy, discouraging way we lost, and memories of last season's late collapse.

Houston is awful. They got hammered by some Tx directional school that non of us ever heard of until they beat Houston We reverted back to script last night. Stupid mistakes, timid play and poor execution.

RE: Get a Grip
If we (Houston) had our OC from last year (he's now at TCU - see their offense now) - we'd be undefeated.
To say we are a cupcake basically means you do not know what is going on at Cullen Blvd. Also if our Special Teams did not have their head up their ass at BYU that's a 3 point game 3 times with the ball in the 4th with a inept OC and when BYU still had Hill at QB.
Lets just say when you replace Freshman AAC player of the year (O'Korn) you know there are issues behind the scenes.

Uh, NO
We won 3 games last year. (and that was a big improvement for us. lol)
Only delusional fans would suggest Houston is a cupcake for Memphis.
A cupcake for an SEC power? Sure.
A cupcake for Memphis football?

RE: Get a Grip
I think most fans have a grip. I personally think that Houston is neither cupcake nor world beater. Houston (IMHO) is not hot garbage, but we should have won. 5 turnovers = loss generally no matter the comparative team quality.
I say we move on to who is next. A lot of winnable games, should be favored in all except Temple. I'd be shocked if we don't go bowling and that was my only hope to begin the year. The fact we were even dreaming 10-2 says a ton about this program's recent improvement.
I think we all have a 'grip'. Memphis is a good team that had a bad night against a decent, but not great team we should have beaten. Such things happen in sports. C'est la vie.
I kind of want to lock the thread on title alone (seems snarky), but screw it, I'll trust the mt.org posters to have a civil conversation. Honestly after the posting last night and today being generally civil in a loss, that is not an unreasonable expectation

THAT's what pissed me off RIGHT THERE! How convenient to blow a play dead after the ball was snapped over the QB's head. I still don't know why?

RE: Get a Grip
I think that was the play that the announcers said a time-out by Houston had been called just prior to the snap, but the announcer guys were a little miffed by it too. It was hard to tell which came first.
It seemed like we just never really got in the 'zone' long enough to win--starting with the uncertain weather, our fans, our coach, our QB, our whatevers..and even the Defense seemed a little thrown our of their previously certain games at times.
I don't know, maybe Having Ifedi back made things a little uncertain...but I don't know specifics...just want the weakening effects of this loss to disintegrate/evaporate and not sink into our spirits.

Houston favored by 9 next week over Temple.
They are the most talented team we will play the rest of the season, although admittedly they have not played as well all the time...even our game last night took five turnovers and a plus two for them to get the very close win.
