The Joe?
With the Red Wings building a new arena (and Illitch revitalizing the entertainment district) what will happen to the historic Joe Louis Arena? Will the Pistons move downtown into the Joe? If not, then why not?
Also sadly a single business man is going to do more for the City of Detroit than the city, state, and federal government has since the collapse of Detroit. Now if only we could afford the EMS services, would be nice if someone stepped in on that.

Why is that sad?
It was businessmen, not the government, that built Detroit to begin with.

Rest assured that if it succeeds there will be no shortage of politicians willing to take credit for it.

RE: The Joe?
As far as I know, the structure may very well get the wrecking ball. I don't remember what happened with the proposal that went before the council in the spring, but it asserted something to that effect. It's a great place with a lot of history, but times are changing.
As for the Pistons, Tom Gores and Platinum Equity have thrown their influence and money into keeping them playing at The Palace. Those were big-money renovations completed in the last few years. I don't see the Pistons moving downtown this decade, if ever. Gilbert keeps pushing the downtown move idea because he stands to make a lot of money off of it.

It appears it is going to be demolished.
If it were most other cities, I would say this is a bad thing. Detroit, however, has much bigger problems than trying to save an old, run-down arena that needs major improvements.
