Yesterday's Big Academic News
A significant step towards the goal of recognition as a top tier metropolitan research university was taken yesterday with the announcement that UofM received a $10.9 million biomedical research grant from the National Institutes of Health. The research is related to wearable mobile devices and sensors used to collect large amounts of health data. Among the 11 other universities which will collaborate with Memphis are UCLA, Rice, Northwestern, Michigan, Ohio State, UMass and Georgia Tech. This will likely benefit the greater Memphis community in several important ways.

This is a big deal. I wish one of the local TV stations would allow them to play a spot on this over the big tv in the sky.

RE: Yesterday's Big Academic News
We could have multiple threads on this and that would be OK with me. Improving our academic standing is a big deal and things like this are a step in the right direction. Our academic image has held us back as much as our incompetence on the football field in our pursuit of moving on to bigger and better things.

Both are changing. 04-rock

Wonder how much Memphis being constantly named among the fattest cities in American played into the selection. Then again it could be due to our healthcare system in town.

Posts like these are so much more funny because my mind reads them with Sean Connery's voice.

RE: Yesterday's Big Academic News
You are seeing the payoff of the philosophy that is transforming the University. SR started it with the increased emphasis on research. We are recruiting professors that bring this type of active research to Memphis. Rudd under Martin and now as president has been the archetech for creating the infrastructure that has been painful, especially with state of Higher Ed funding.

If any of you have influence in politics you need to use it to help change how education is funded in this state. We underfund education at every level and embrace a tax structure that keeps us vulnerable, and focused on low paying jobs. Our governor is taking credit for an idea called TN Promise which provides free tuition for technical and community college degrees for all graduating seniors. I love the idea. I love the idea so much that we've been doing it in Memphis for three friggin years before he "borrowed" the idea. Although yield was a problem we had over 4,500 of our seniors in Memphis complete the application for this fall. All this before TnPromise was ever announced.

You want to know how he is paying for it? He raided the lottery reserve fund and he is taking $500 a year away from freshmen and sophomores at four year schools with the promise of repaying it to them in jr and senior years. It would have been $1,000 but we marched on Nashville to make sure the lottery money was being protected for use where education costs the most.

Research, grants, publishing are priorities for tenure and the shift in funding for Grad Assts. in the FIT and in the new Entrepreneurship Institute. They are exploring a concept called Cube funding that provides funds for collaborating research across disciplines. Being the lead in this project is a natural because Memphis is a leader in technology related to logistics and folks that's part of what this is all about. The seeds of the IT development at and for FEDEX is helping make all this possible. And it's helping bring in people with the expertise to raise our national and international stature.

Yes this is big. It will open up other doors. It will bring people to Memphis to work, some to stay but mostly grants like this will help change a culture. Make sure you hold our governor and both the house and senate responsible. Growth in stature brings many benefits but it also comes with a cost. And pay attention so that you are not fooled by the rob Peter to pay Paul funding mentality we have in this state.
