ODU fans...
I went back and watched our game with you guys. Very impressed with your fans. VERY loud at times.

I think you guys are headed in the right direction and I'm happy to have you guys in CUSA.

What is the latest word on the new stadium?

Quote:The stadium, which is expected to seat approximately 30,000, will not open for years. ODU officials have declined to issue a timeline, saying there are too many variables.

This would be concerning for me if I was an ODU fan. Marshall Stadium was almost put on hyper speed when it was first proposed in 1988. It was opened in 1991.

Well the place we want to build it has student housing. New ones need to be built before we tear them down. That's just one issue.

RE: ODU fans...
With all the private partnerships with universities going on these days, you can get new dorms at no cost. Marshall did it to get new dorms and got a great new student rec center kicked in on the deal. The cost to the university is you just won't get any revenue off the new dorms for 25 years.

Is there a suitable place for ODU to play in or around Norfolk if you had to build where Foreman Field is. The way Foreman is built I take it would be hard to expand and upgrade the Clam Shells.

It's already decided where ODUs new stadium will be.

ODU is planning on building the stadium at the back of the college on the river to make a waterfront stadium looking out on the river. As to a timetable, the unofficial timetable i've heard is that the stadium should be built by 2018 as that is when ODU hosts Virginia Tech. They could build a 80,000 person stadium and it would be sold out for that game.

Quote:ODU has had mixed results from consultants doing ticket-demand studies. Consultants from PriceWaterhouse told the school in 2008 that its new football program would sell 6,600 season tickets and recommended building just 12 suites. ODU instead sold nearly 15,000 season tickets and has sold out all 39 games at Foreman Field.

So.... build it twice as big as your study says to. 04-cheers

Internet commenters are just burning hot garbage. There's no getting around it. It's bad everywhere. It's not quite as bad at places that require you to sign in with Facebook, but it's still not great.

Anonymity (either literal or effective via phony name) gives protection to buttholes and inspires good people to play the role without fear of blowback.

I believe the original idea was to do a major refurb of Foreman Field, but the parcel of land is too small to even sustain a 30,000-seat facility. And once they touch the clam shells, they lose their ADA grandfather clause, I believe, so at that point it becomes a teardown job.

I don't know what the max capacity at the desired site on the end of the campus is going to be. If I remember correctly, they could conceivably get it up to 50,000, but the infrastructure isn't that great as it is; trying to shoehorn another 12,000 or so on campus is going to be tricky, and going from 20K to 50K is going to require some died-on-the-cross-for-my-sins miracle-making.

RE: ODU fans...
I think ODU shouldn't be limiting the capacity too much. 30k seems small for the Hampton Roads area, especially given the long streak of sellouts so far at Foreman Field. Even the consulting firm that originally said how many season tickets you'd sell underestimated by half.

I hope ODU gets the ball rolling sooner rather than later with good vision for future expansion. I think you'll need it!

Go CUSA

At first I thought 28-30,000 at the onset was limiting, but given the infrastructure challenges (particularly traffic flow), the downward trend in major sports attendance and the move toward more fan-friendly and intimate facilities, I think 30 is a fine jumping off point. Now if they build a stadium that can't go much higher than that, then there's a problem, but I'm crossing my fingers for a 30,000-seat facility that can increase in stages to a maximum of around 50, which is probably not going to be reached until I'm dead and gone (I'm 40).

I don't blame the original consultants for underestimating demand. I-AA football is only popular in pockets, and considering you were dealing with a commuter-heavy campus and the probability at the time of a long road to respectability on the field, I wouldn't have presented a report that read "20K is a given no matter who takes the field" because truth is, nobody expected THAT. Hoped, sure. Expected? Nay.

Im right here with you on this. Marshall Stadium, now Joan C Edwards Stadium was opened in 1991 as a 28K seat stadium. It has been increased in stages to 38,227. JCES can reach 55,000 if ever needed. Footers that were put in at the time of orig. construction allows for decks on both sides to be put in. Im almost 43 and I doubt that I ever see those 2 decks built in my lifetime. But its nice to know they are there.
