If it happens, they should play USC, considering their mascot is dressed like a Roman Centurion and not a "Trojan."

I bet most Americans outside of Boston don't realize it either. Same thing with Dayton - I can't tell you how many people I've met that think Dayton is a public school.

USC has a Methodist history. The whole protestant vs catholic thing is intriguing but...we are talking about Rome. Probably the last city for that contest to happen.

One big reason why it should be Boston College then.

Not to mention St Louis and San Francisco.

ND and BC are the only two FBS football playing Catholic universities in America.
But yeah, I doubt most Italians care much, if at all.
That said, if scheduled, I will make plans to be there. That would be part of a great vacation.

Why? "Home field advantage". :)

Putting Protestants and Catholics on an "equal playing field" so to speak.

I'm pretty sure the Pope knows about BC, though - and I KNOW BC realizes the Pope is a Jesuit. LINK.

Are you saying that Catholics wouldn't want it, or that Protestants wouldn't want it? I think most Catholics would be all for it.

In Rome? With the Pope taking part as is much of the talk in this thread? No.
Anywhere else? Absolutely.

Agreed. It's the epicenter of Catholicism in the world. That's why you have the two teams from Catholic schools play there.
Have been to Rome many times. One of my favorite cities in the World. Yes, I think that most BC fans would love for this to happen!

RE: AS Roma president wants ND in Rome
Do Italians even know anything about American football? They didn't even have an NFL Europe franchise.
Ireland I get - they refer to soccer as "soccer" and probably have more cultural influence form the US as any country in the world (including Canada). They're also the only country I've been in that likes America top to bottom (for the Irish, the role of the big bad rude arrogant outsider is played by England, and Americans are more like long-lost cousins).
But Italy? A lower % of Italians speak English than any country in Western Europe except Spain & Portugal, and most of them are in the North. I doubt an American football game in Rome would attract much local attention.

ND would bring about 35,000 fans (or more) to Rome like it did to Dublin in 2012.
What a vacation package to sell to ND fans, no?

I'm thinking a high percentage of local ticket buyers are Americans living there, such as military families, etc. who miss the US and haven't been to a college football game in years.

I'm Methodist and I would totally be down for any team to play Notre Dame in Rome!
Army vs. Notre Dame in Rome!
