RE: Coaches' pre-season basketball picks
I think this year is prime for multiple bids. If Tech can get a few big OOC wins from our road games against Temple, NC State, and Syracuse I think we can get an at large bid with a good win total. Not sure what everyone else's OOC looks like but I think we have a really good slate of games to get the committee's attention.

Hopefully not but let's see the teams play first. If we only get 1 bid then we need to get a W or two in the NCAA's.

RE: Coaches' pre-season basketball picks
Charlotte has almost no depth int he post, 3 guys that can contribute and a body on the bench. We can't afford any injuries there or we're in trouble. We're loaded with guards/wings, hopefully we can get some consistent 3 point shooting. How good we can be may very well depend on how well Pierria Henry and Braxton Ogbueze (Florida transfer) mesh.

I think this is the most talent we've had in quite some time and it's time for Major to win.

UTEP's big games are:

vs. Washington St. ("big" probably more just because they're a Pac-12 team)
vs. NMSU
at NMSU
vs. Arizona
vs. Xavier (assuming we beat Princeton and they get by San Diego in the Wooden Legacy)
vs. Washington (assuming we beat Xavier and Washington holds up their end of the deal)
at Colorado St. (only true road game--this needs to change)

I've said it before. I think we have to beat beat Arizona to get in the conversation. If not, the talk will be they had their chance and they blew it.

As someone who has seen a little more from the Tops then a casual fan. I will say I am not worried about the "lack of size". WKU could easily go 12 deep this season and I expect that. A little more speed and athleticism then the Tops have had the last 3-4 seasons. I think more full court pressing and up tempo play will counter a size difference. Big Ben Lawson is a 7'2" lanky guy in the post. But he got a lot more confident over the summer playing for England national team U-20. He challenges every shot and will slam it down any chance he gets. He does not play soft. Add in new recruits Clayton at SG/SF and Johnson at PF and I'm expecting a good year.

Win the conference? Ehh idk about that. 24+ win season? Yea I see that. I know Harper is more excited about this team then he has been any team he has had since being on the hill. If WKU were still in the Sun Belt I'd prolly go ahead and pencil in NCAA appearance.

That would be glorious. I'm not sure how I feel about WKU basketball this year. Price and Fant need to take control of this team like OMV did a few years ago. I just don't know enough about CUSA teams to make a judgement.

Charlotte's Pwer 5 teams (whatever that's worth) are:

Penn State (ugh)
South Carolina (possible - ugh; make it past this and the other teams are USC, Drexel, Miami, Akron, and Cornell)
Miami
Georgetown
Georgia Tech

Just to add to this, if Charlotte and Miami both make the championship game in Charleston, we will play Miami twice, in back to back games. One in Charleston, the other in Charlotte.

We have been saying that now for 3 seasons, will this be the season we will? I have my doubts.....Until Lawson stays healthy and I see him play in more than one game and not in practice, I am not sold he can stay healthy and or contribute...Every season we have guys get hurt.....If that continues to happen and Fant continues to get in foul trouble than we will struggle. If Rostov/Lawson can give us solid minutes, Fant can stay on the court and JJ and Clayton thrive than yes we should really be improved from last season. I am not holding my breath but I would hope this would be a team Harper is excited about as we have a lot of guys who have played a lot of Div. 1 minutes....

Before I get criticized by fellow WKU fans, I have my BIG RED goggles off and have heard the same preseason hype now for 15+ seasons...Its time to actually deliver on the court...

I followed both conferences last season and for WKU fans CUSA is a definite step up, we will need to be a much improved team from last season if we want to finish top 5..

They lost a ton of players, they lost their coach, and their coach took some of their commits with him.

I'd be really shocked to see USM in the top 4. If they finish in the top 4, their coach deserves a raise.
We lost all 5 starters and a key reserve. Only four players coming back that played significant minutes last year and our tallest player is 6'7". I think everyone's expecting the worst and if we finish near the top of the conference it would be a shock to most fans.

I'll take it one step further an say that UTEP will be winning by ten with one minute to go and lose when Tim Floyd goes to the four corners and tries to run out the clock.

WKU will struggle this year in CUSA. WKU lost by 10 to a Marshall team that only won 4 CUSA games last year. Marshall fans will agree that last year was an awful year and yet they beat WKU by 10. The level of competition is CUSA is much higher than what WKU has been playing against.
