As long as Hare completes his passes and establishes consistency, the job is his. If he struggles like he did against Kent and Arkansas, then Maddie will continue to see chances.
I really don't think he struggled in either case. Anyone would have been overmatched against Arkansas. His numbers were not bad against Kent, they just couldn't get the ball in the endzone. Wouldn't call that struggling.
True, but you also have to remember that he overthrew Da'ron on what would've been a sure TD pass and he missed at least 2 bubble screens, which are the bread and butter play of this offense. He had opportunities to score points, but he missed them, and I'm not including the FG Wedel missed because that's beyond his control. If he makes that throw to Da'ron and those bubble screens, I doubt we would've even seen Maddie until the second half.
What this quote tells me is that Carey believes Hare is the best QB of the two he's got right now. A good portion of me agrees with him, despite what Maddie's done in limited time.
We're all agreed that Hare has the best arm of the bunch, if he can be accurate consistently. The throws he made against NU are some that Mac and Maddie quite possibly couldn't have made. Also, despite Maddie being the better runner, which every can agree with, Hare isn't a bad runner. He has an unusual upright running style that could get him killed one of these days, but he can be effective when he needs to be. Finally, and I noticed this particularly in the 4th quarter of the NU game, which I believe to be the best football he's played this year, he can be very effective running the zone read/read option. He completely fooled the camera on several plays in the 4th quarter and my exact thought was, "We haven't seen anyone run it like that since Harnish."
Take it for what it's worth, regardless of who you think is better, but right now Carey believes Hare is the best QB he has and he's going to keep putting him out there hoping he finally finds consistency. If that happens, the only times you'll see Maddie in the game are in garbage time, or a play or two here or there ala Harnish/Lynch in 2010 and 2011.
