RE: Vance McDonald back on the field for the 49ers.
McDonald had a fairly long gain on a reception tonight but fumbled it after a nice tackle by the Rams. The Rams recovered and are beating the 49ers pretty big early.

In the 4th quarter, it looked like Vance was wide open in the back of the end zone for a sure TD reception, but fellow Niner Vernon Davis drifted over to try to get the ball, too. The pair collided and the ball fell incomplete. Vance is NOT look happy at all, as the possibility of his first NFL touchdown had been spoiled by his own teammate.

Down 14-0 in the first quarter, the Niners' D stiffened and the offense started hitting on a few cylinders, outscoring the Rams 31-3 in the final three periods.

USM grad Austin Davis played very well for the Rams in 1Q, but sacks and errant passes plagued him the rest of the game.

The Niners' first TD came in the waning seconds of the first half with what Jon Gruden called the worst defensive performance he'd ever seen: A rookie CB bit on a double move by Brandon Lloyd, who streaked down the left sideline, caught Kap's pass and sprinted for an 80-yard TD.

Harbaugh's play calling went uncharacteristically conservative in 4Q -- appearing that running down the clock was more important than trying to score and playing soft zone defense -- which nearly brought St. Louis back into the game. (I'm sure y'all know this ominous, grabbing-defeat-from-the-jaws-of-victory feeling.) Fortunately, Davis' poor passing kept St. Louis from advancing very far, save for one FG. And a Pick 6 on rather short pass with a minute left, cutting short the Rams' hopes of tying the game and sealing San Francisco's win.

Davis looked very good early, and I think that St. Louis may have found another diamond in the rough, but like most rookies, he struggled mightily when pressure found him, which happened a lot in the second half. The 49ers made great second half defensive adjustments and it was night and day when watching Davis in each half.
