Like many others, I quit subscribing to the daily local when it was painfully obvious they were cowtowing to the fine folks down Oxford way. I think it was in 2008 when the Black Bear AD and a few others came up to MEMPHIS and met with the daily local sports editors and other decision makers to plead their case for more coverage.
A side issue for me was Calkins continuing public needling of Fredo.
So, I save the $6 a month (or whatever it is for the subscription) and let the daily local continue its slide to bankruptcy. Which I will cheer when it happens.
Hoddy Toddy, CA. How bout dem Auburn Tigers?
I cannot imagine any other passionate fan base allowing the local paper to usurp the home town team with fawning coverage of a rival without a fight. I do not blame any Tiger fan for canceling their subscription and seeking their Tiger news elsewhere.
Ole Miss is the local team too, correct?
When I lived in St. Louis, Mizzou got more coverage than SLU.
When I lived in Chicago, Illinois got more coverage than DePaul.
When I lived in Champaign, the local paper sucked and I never bothered checking what the heck the coverage was
Local is a fairly flexible distinction. A large state school has a large reach than an urban commuter school. Ole Miss, UTk, MissState, and Arkansas all hold large market share in the 901. It's not a dig on our Tigers, but rather an acknowledgement of how diverse the fan bases in the city are.
I certainly don't begrudge bossman (or any fan) making their purchase decision of the local paper based on their coverage, I just think that when Memphis has more success (again, we are clearly a program rising), then this sort of thing will self correct.
But, this is a personal opinion and certainly something that reasonable minds will differ on, like many issues...
I may might subscribe if they covered the fightin illini. Not so much for the 2nd best team from Mississippi.
Snicker
Well the relative merits of the Tribune / SunTimes / StL Post Dispatch being better than the CA is a separate point I suppose

Very kind of you to say Boss. We obviously disagree here, but its respectful and I'm glad you understand it as such.
Best to you and cheers

I just can't believe this. The Tigers played their hearts out Friday night! We should be celebrating our boys win not talking about their loss!

I dont understand the hate with the CA. They are a business trying to determine what their majority audience will read therefore pay. As much as I love the Tigers and enjoy their recent success, Memphis is still a huge SEC town. Ole Miss and Miss St. having success along with Bama and Auburn is not good for the Tigers. The CA knows that a wider audience is reached through SEC print rather than the Tigers. Its a regional paper.
To sum it up, if you dont like it then dont buy it. They are in charge of writing real stories, not catering to the minority. If we compete a few more years and the Miss schools fall off then of course we will be the main story, but right now thats not the case.

That paper sold out to the SEC and Grizzlies years ago.

You are wrong about that. Tigers still get more column inches by far than SEC combined if you combine all sports but lately too much SEC when Tigers do well on a particular day.

RE: Front page of Commercial Appeal's Sports Section
I live in the Nashville area.
The local paper up here gives ZERO and I mean ZERO coverage to the Tigers and ZERO coverage to the AAC.
Most times not even a single line showing the score in tiny print.
UT, Vandy, MTSU, TSU, and the Titans get the coverage.
I get it. The state university and the local teams.
The CA has and continues to give far too much coverage to non-local schools.
Between that and a certain columnist they used to have I, like boss man, quit supporting them years ago.
