Which is why a team that went 10-0 against all non-scholarship teams finished 37th in 2004?

Well, yeah. If there schedule had been ranked in the top 75-100 they would have finished around 10th. Your question answered your question.

How do you even rank that schedule?

You don't. What I mean is if it was a ranked schedule the weight from sagarin would have pulled them much higher. Marshall was ranked like 22nd in 1996 with an FCS schedule, from going undefeated and beating the best playoff teams to help boost our SoS. If we had gone 15-0 vs a top 100 FBS schedule we would have been in the sagarin top 10. No factor other than SoS would pull an undefeated team any higher, but the SoS weight will.

If a team goes undefeated they can get pretty high in the rankings, but they get a turbo boost up if the SoS is even decent.

That makes sense I guess, but it doesn't change the fact that there's something wrong with the system when a team like Harvard can finish 37th.

Sagarin is all about a guy who may have taken more than one math class at a community college but realized one day that being a skilled purveyor of venomous reptilian secretions is MUCH more profitable (and, apparently, important).

I'll take a shot:

1. Marshall
2. MTSU
3. La Tech
4. FIU
5. UAB
6. WKU
7. Rice
8. FAU
9. UNT
10. UTSA
11. ODU
12. USM
13. UTEP

You have UTEP ranked way to high in this list. I know there are only 13 teams this year but still... way to high.

UTEP is not a bad team. The problem was Tech's D can stop the run and UTEP can't pass. It also didn't help that UTEP started 3 drives from there own 1. I was impressed with UTEP's run D but our receivers are better than your DBs.

Tech will destroy running teams this year, I am curious if Tech can beat a team with a good throwing QB.

A balanced offensive team would be able to neutralize a strong stop-run defensive team.

RE: Week 6 Rankings
Here is my ranking:

Marshall - Clear No 1
La Tech - When good, really good. When bad, they really suck.
MTSU - Close with Tech for No 2 but D wins championships or at least gets you to the dance.
FIU - Good D needs better O to move up
UAB - Could be a sleeper this year.
WKU - This may be a little high but you have a good O.
FAU - Could pull a upset but middle of the pack
ODU - Rice win was good but the last 2 weeks shows ODU is not ready this year to be a top team
Rice - Could go on a roll but the toughest schedule remaining should keep them in the middle of the pack.
UNT - The Nichols State win was huge, JK. We will find out this week if UNT will battle USM for the bottom spot.
UTEP - Bad luck at TECH and not being able to pass will keep them in the bottom. I do believe they will run over teams that don't stop the run well.
UTSA - After a great first game, it has been MEH. 4 loses in a row not looking good.
USM - Getting better just not quite there yet.

I don't think USM belongs in the bottom 2 any more.

This is EXACTLY what I told one of these "Miner" fans on this board last week and he laughed. (I should look him up!) I told him that Showers "couldn't hit the side of a barn" with a forward pass, and he laughed again. Well.....he ain't laughing now. 01-lauramac2

Tech basically equal with Marshall after losing to an FCS team at home? North Texas #3? That surprises me a great deal.

Oh yeah, and you thought last year was all Holtz's fault and wanted him fired when he inherited 17 new starters. Brilliance! 03-lmfao

The heat is on when a coach loses 8 games in one season. Especially when he coaches as bad as Holtz did last year against Tulane and Army, and.......well, you get the picture. He was awful.

I don't disagree with his premise, the final score isn't the only indicator because he's right, the best team doesn't always win.

It's possible that WKU finishes ahead of us in the standings, but it would take them winning out and us dropping three in conference.

There is the best team and the best team at that time. I'll go along with that. WKU may have been the better team, at that time, but over all MT is the better team between the two and with the win.

You're right though, there are still a lot of games left to work out the final answer to this discussion.
