Which Teams draw the most Social Media likes in a market?
New York times did market research county by county in the United States of which college Football teams drew the most Social Media likes.

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/...16,-93.344

Some interesting numbers: Craighead County (Where AState is located) is the only Arkansas County where the Razorbacks do not have at least 50 percent eye balls. In fact, the numbers are staggeringly different. Arkansas State has made a lot of gains in a ton of Northeast Arkansas counties

Lafayette has made strong territorial gains in Southern Louisiana, and has crept within 10 percent of LSU's numbers within Lafayette's own Parish.

South Alabama is the 3rd most popular in only one Alabama county. Troy is 3rd in 5 or 6 counties.

Monroe is 2nd most popular in a lot of NE Louisiana counties, but with sub 10 percent viewership numbers in most places. Tech has slightly higher numbers in its region of Louisiana.

Texas State is the 2nd most popular in the San Marcos area...ahead of Texas A&M, but unfortunately they only appear listed in two texas counties. For Comparison, UNT is 2nd in the Denton area, but does not appear rated for any other county.

Georgia State, Georgia Southern, and App State are not in the top 3 in their own counties. Which is not terribly surprising.

Keep in mind this is a very flawed way to look at things, because TV viewers doesn't account for non sports fans, and also doesn't account for what the actual look of the county is.

Its interesting, but flawed.

I think it shows some territorial gains...but unfortunately without visiting a general area you cant really determine what the support of the county is.

And it would surprise me if GS. App, or GSU were even a choice they could make in this poll/study/whatever.
I would love to see this map updated in 2-3 years from now.

EDIT: Looking again, It's obvious that FCS teams (at the time) were not included. Montana and North Dakota don't even have the Griz or the Bizon listed in their states.

The article says that it is based on FACEBOOK LIKES....not television viewership or eyeballs.

I assume people who click LIKE on Arkansas State AND Arkansas would be counted twice and weighted equally. Which would be not very useful data.

I'll only say this. If you're using Facebook Likes as a means to say what team you support, thats more than flawed, thats idiotic. Fulton County, where GaSt is as well as Georgia Tech is literally almost half UGA then Alabama then Auburn...which is what it is for most of the state of Georgia. Could this be because UGA has more facebook articles and posts? Quite possibly. It would be interesting to see facebook statuses on Gameday, that would be a much better indicator of college allegiance...however thats an extreme invasion of privacy so thats out. This map is pointless.

You are right. It is fairly meaningless other than to point out that "Liking" another team other than your own damages your school.

Marketers, advertisers, sponsors, etc. buy Facebook and other marketing data to make decisions on how to advertise, where to advertise, who to sponsor, who to market with, what to stock stores with in their geographical area, how to decorate, etc.

"Liking" or "Following" a competing school in your area even for casual reasons....actually does perception damage to your own school.

I still like this map, obvious bias. And this was before some teams were even teams (GSU) I believe...i'm also not sure how they figured this out.

Common Census map from 2010. It more or less tells which fans in what geographical areas are more motivated to go register in an online survey than others.

I actually think it is a pretty fascinating one. In the Arkansas Delta Arkansas State fans outnumbered Arkansas fans. Does this mean there are more Arkansas State fans in the southern delta? No. But it does show that those minority A-State fans were more motivated than the majority Arkansas fans in those areas to respond to a survey and vote for their team.

A fairly useless poll, but goes to show you that sometime P5 fandom is only about wearing a t-shirt.

I can agree with that, perfect example was that South's Biggest Rivalry poll from some unknown magazine. GS v Appy was leading for the majority of the time, then a D3 rivalry game surpassed us, they are still in first ahead of the Iron Bowl...someone had a campus campaign I feel.

Scientific poll tabs the number of AState fans in Arkansas (among registered voters) at nearly 385,000.

I'm not surprised of USA's relatively small presence on this chart considering the iPhone 3GS is older than our program.

That's really sad! I would have thought that Bullock Co., GA would have GS in the top three. However, I do know of 4.6% of the population in Ashland Co., OH that needs rubbed out.

Yeah...I don't think people are reading what is being said.

Folks, in addition to this map not being about viewership or eyeballs, its also not a poll. Facebook gave the New York Times the data for everyone of its users that basically said "Person X likes Georgia State and he lives in Fulton County." Then NYT tabulated all of that and made it into a map.
