RE: USF gets big OT transfer from Stanford
...Shannon Gibbons said the urge to come home outweighed staying at Stanford.

"We're a really tight family and he got home sick and wanted to come back,'' Shannon Gibbons said. "USF was the perfect place for him. They are happy to have him.''

Gibbons was one of the most sought after linemen in the country. He was invited to play in the 2014 Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl, 2014 West Coast Bowl, 2014 Blue-Grey Bowl, 2014 Offense-Defense Bowl and 2013 Pinellas County All-Star Game. He was also selected to the 2014 Team USA U19 National Team.

USF coach Willie Taggart said in a release by USF that Gibbons should be a perfect fit for the Bulls.

“Reilly is a big, strong, athletic and very intelligent offensive lineman who fits the mold of our program and the kind of power offense we want to run perfectly,” Taggart said. “He is very bright young man and another great Bay Area talent that we are thrilled to welcome to our program. We are excited to see what he can do when he joins our program in January.”

Holy cow! This is great news! Definitely an area of real need for USF. If we actually show some legit improvement this season, this plus another good recruiting class could mean 2015 is our year to turn the corner. How did he get the waiver, they typically don't give one for being homesick, right? Needs to be some hardship or similar...

Edit: Articles says NCAA has still to decide... so maybe not definite he's onboard for 2015?

Seriously, you have to ask? The next time a transfer will actually sit out the required year at USF will be the first time. Arn't HIPPA laws great!

He never played a down at Stanford

In the thread I started already, Gibbons did not participate in any practices for the Cardinal, according to his father, Shannon Gibbons. He never even enrolled for classes at Stanford.

This is apparently not a hardship case.

According to USF release, he never actually enrolled at Stanford and is therefore eligible immediately:

The 6-6, 292-pound Gibbons originally committed to Stanford during the 2014 signing period, but elected to return home prior to enrolling. He is expected to enroll in classes on the USF campus and join the Bulls’ program in January. He joins a 2014 recruiting class that was already ranked the consensus No. 1 in the American Athletic Conference. He is the 11th member of USF’s 2014 class to have received first or second team all-state honors in Florida and the 10th to have received a four-star ranking from a recruiting service. He is the 13th member of the class from the Bay Area.
