Pretty good article chronicling the events that got a Texas boy to East Carolina. Seems Houston could've gotten him, if they wanted him.

Hindsight is 20/20. Blake Bortles had practically zero offers as a QB. It's hardly an exact science.

Good story, but hardly unique.

Matt Grothe was a two star local QB that led his team to the state championships who garnered hardly any division I-A offers. He was part of a two QB class, that featured 4-star QB Carlton Hill as one of the major recruits of the class. Hill quickly flamed out and gave way to Grothe. Which all he did was shatter a ton of BigEast passing records despite losing most of his senior year to injury. Carden is a good story but just shows you how much luck is involved in recruiting the QB position or recruiting in general.

Both Ruff's QB recruits will be wearing NFL jerseys. . . even if they are back ups/ 3rd stringers. They will get their shot. I would say it's more the system than 'luck'

at the time we had a 4 star qb in terrence broadways (ULL's qb now) and we had to choose between carden and piland ..and sumlin chose piland, sumlin loved both and actually personally recruited and often visten carden..but went on with piland instead

Oh I know. But if a phone call never occurred or friendships never happened, it would be very different for East Carolina and Shane.

To tell you the truth, I probably would've not looked too much at Carden if I were a bigger school in the region. Add the dogmatic approach that coaches have taken when considering QBs to that and I become even more understanding.

We almost missed the 3rd pick in the NFL draft, and he was born and raised 6 miles from our campus. The same with Stanback, we literally offered him on one of the last days possible because the old Syracuse coach called O'Leary about this kid.

It's crazy how common amazing talent almost falls through the cracks.

RE: Article: How everybody missed out on ECU's Shane Carden
Sometimes QB's simply do not fit the mold that schools are looking for but have that it thing like Bortles, Keenum and Carden that just make them win. Jeff Blake was given offers from schools to be a Defensive Backfield player and choose ECU because we were willing to let him play QB. Schools were definitely not lined up to give David Garrard a QB scholarship since he looked like DLineman coming out of High School.

On the flip side the highest ranked QB at ECU we ever landed as a recruit turned out to be a monumental flop.
