Teams that actually control zip codes around their school.

ECU
UCF
UConn
Memphis

The other schools are obviously in areas dominated by traditional powers, but still nice to see our schools starting to carve out territory of fans in their own area.

Cool stuff, but I think they confused UNC and Duke.... There is no mention of UNC at all and Duke has percentages everywhere and that is false.

Two questions:

1. How is it that UCF controls so much area but USF has 0.
2. Why are there so many buckeye fans in NC?

RE: College Football Fan map by Zip Code
"Ohio is the most populous state with only one football program in the big five conferences, so it makes sense that Ohio State has the plurality of fans in every single Ohio ZIP code. (Apologies to the Cincinnati Bearcats, Akron Zips and Miami (Ohio) RedHawks, among others.) Not only that: Ohio State claims territory in most of its neighboring states, including Indiana, Pennsylvania and — gasp! — Michigan."

Sorry this is incorrect. Every local fan poll conducted for the past 5 years or so demonstrates that Ohio State does not have the plurality of fans in Greater Cincinnati. Even Ohio State acknowledges this and they are doing their damnest to try to correct this (they have hired asst coaches with Cincy ties, they played a spring game down here, etc.).

There are a lot of Ohio transplants.

Tampa has like the largest UF alumni association chapter in the country. UCF has slowly been taking over Orlando. We churn out thousands of alumni every year and most of them are now staying in the Orlando area and taking jobs in the area. Not surprised to see UCF controlling our area, especially east Orlando and Seminole County. If you look at the map, all of the UCF area that is darker is actually east of downtown Orlando. The west suburbs are still gator nation for sure.

Same reason there are so many Steelers fans in NC.

Ohio & Pittsburgh aren't exactly wonderful places, so they all come here.

Yea, the map strikes me as incredibly incorrect when it comes to the greater Cincinnati area. Most local polls show UC fans outnumbering Buckeye fans in the area by about 2 to 1. There is certainly a substantial Buckeye presence in Cincinnati, but it doesn't compare to the number of UC fans.

Remember they based this on Facebook data. May not be as accurate as one would think.

The burbs are not gator nation. South orlando is heavily Ucf. Additionally we are gaining a presence in south fl. You can see the band between uf and Miami.

I was talking about west Orlando. Drive out to Dr. Phillips, Ocoee, Apopka, and Winter Garden area. Gator fans outnumber FSU and UCF fans combined out here.

Yes, and it is unfortunate. The Carolinas have been invaded for a second time...

Honestly I'm just surprised the New York Times realizes there's a world west of the Hudson River.

Agreed. I think they have some incredibly bad data.

Right . There are not more UK and Notre Dame football fans than UC in Hamilton Co Ohio. Not even close . you can argue about Ohio St vs UC . This data is beyond bad. Facebook likes huh?

That's because the map is based on facebook 'likes'. The Heels dominate the map based on 'People of Wal-Mart' appearances.

Northwestern no where to be found in the Chicago area. The map makes no sense. There is some NW fans showing around their home in Evanston but come on.
