This is kinda my point. How is it possible that Callahan, Paulus, Caprio, Ortiz, Graham, and now Cluley have all looked so bad in the same system. What is different?

In watching the UNH game on TV, which can be a good vantage point, it was obvious that Cluely, at least in that game, is not accurate with his passes. Too many of his passes were either short or behind the receiver. Of course, poor protection by the O Line could account for some of this. Whenever the TV zoomed in on Cluely for a close-up he was always licking his fingers - first one hand, and then the other hand, and repeat, and repeat - he appears very nervous and unsure of himself, at least IMHO.

Callahan and Paulus looked pretty good in the system. Injuries brought them down more than anything else. The other three are from a relatively small sample size, where none of them had significant time without being injured.

Jealous?

Their parking and tailgate operation is Amateur Hour. They had implemented a new one-way traffic pattern that was going to solve their problems, but their staff at Boulder Field had no plan to actually get people into parking spots. They were also checking ID on every person in every car, while kids streamed in through the woods. Any way you cut it the whole scene was an embarrassment for UNH. Mobile booking unit, and mobile DUI command center on site as you entered the parking lot. 10K - 12K kids who came only for the party and never entered the game.

Zablenoise,
Personally I thought Callahan played great. He just got hurt.

You're right. It was unfair of me to lump him in with the others.

That alone, is a reflection that we are not playing to potential. Our memorable defenses had everyone flying to the ball and wrapping up. Have seen a lot of players holding their position and waiting for the play to come to them, and shoulder hits with no wrapping up. The Green Swarm hasn't appeared.

At some point, it's about players not overthinking on both sides of the ball and just instinctively playing the game. Airek Green may be the only one having that kind of season to this point.

So I had our defense explained to me by someone who really understands football. And now that I see what he was talking about, I can't unsee it.

Against the run we use our big interior lineman (Coleman, Claytor, Stephens) to eat up space, plug holes and occupy blockers. That way Airek and Luke can come screaming downhill to make the tackles.

Teams have had some success running the ball this year because they've either been running to the outside where they have superior speed or they run during passing situations. When we have our smaller tackles on the field it allows the opposing o-line to get to the second level and make blocks on our linebackers.

Against the pass our biggest problem is simply a lack of experience. Our "smaller" pass rushing tackles just don't have the game experience (or raw physical attributes like Stephens) that our other tackles have. In a few years I think it will be a great unit. They just aren't there yet.

This leaves the pass rush up to Reilly and Sinnott. They're capable but a lot of times Mike is getting doubled or the quarterback is simply able to avoid the rush by stepping up in the pocket.

It was also interesting to me that he pointed out that Mike really only has one move (it's a helluva move though). And if you can prepare and counter his bull rush you can really shut him down.

Anyway I'm not a coach but the way this was explained to me made a lot of sense and I hope I relayed his analysis coherently.

We drop to 15 in the TSN poll. Kind of shocked, thought we would take a stronger hit given how soundly we were beat.

Still not convinced on this. Losing Donald hurt, but we not giving up rushing yards on passing downs only. Watch the Lafayette game

RE: Tribe @ New Hampshire.
Out of curiosity, who are our smaller, pass-rushing tackles?

As I have seen it - we are only rotating three tackles on the D Line - Stephens, Coleman and Claytor. Bopp comes in occasionally. I have not seen the other defensive tackles (Congo and Davey) get many reps.

Often on passing downs we appear to be playing with three down linemen, usually one of the three listed above and some combination of Reilly, Sinnott, and occasionally Peyton Gryder.

One player I've really grown to like on the defense this season is Ian Haislip. Was he dinged up against UNH?

Haislip played, but he's Airek Green's backup. So with Green back his time on the field will likely take a hit.

Haislip didn't look dinged up from the sidelines, but I know he took some bumps in previous games. I think his PT suffered more from a combo of Green being healthy and UNH putting so many WRs on the field than because of anything on his end.

RE: Tribe @ New Hampshire.
Got this bulk e-mail from the UNH AD, I suspect because of purchasing the tailgate lot tickets online:

Quote:Dear ,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your patience and understanding last Saturday at the Homecoming football game. I realize that this is sometimes the only trip to Durham that some of our alumni are able to make each year, and I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge that there were some issues with traffic and parking.

Our football team certainly handled their business on the field, though we did not execute our game plan in the parking lots or surrounding streets as well! Traffic was difficult to navigate at its peak and we have subsequently identified some of the issues creating the problem. Just as most vehicles were arriving, pedestrians were filling access areas in the parking lots, making it in some locations, difficult to setup a tailgate or navigate to the appropriate destination.

Together with our local authorities, my staff and I are working to resolve some of the areas we have already identified that need improvement. I thank you in advance for your advice and suggestions and patience as we work to improve our game day experience.

We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding last weekend. As such, I would like to offer you complimentary parking and 2 complimentary tickets to either of our last two home games that take place in November. Please contact the ticket office at 603-862-4000, extension 5, and they will be happy to accommodate your request.

Thank you again for your continued support of UNH Athletics.
