Subscribers to Amazon Prime Instant Video are now met with a caution before viewing certain episodes of the long-running cartoon.

It follows concerns that the representation of a black maid on early episodes of the cartoon show – which made its first episodes in the 1940s – was an example of the era’s prejudices.

Tom and Jerry: The Complete Second Volume is accompanied by the caution: ‘Tom and Jerry shorts may depict some ethnic and racial prejudices that were once commonplace in American society. Such depictions were wrong then and are wrong today.’

One fan took to Twitter to say: ‘watched Tom and Jerry since the 60s this is the 1st time I’ve ever heard the R word in relation to it. PC madness!’

Another fan wrote: ‘I loved Tom and Jerry as a kid and it never made me think poorly of ethnic minorities or want to smoke cigars.’

It's not the PC police, it's allowing parents to know that Amazon contains many of these episodes that wouldn't be on TV today, like many racist cartoons of the past. Plus, it's a private company taking it upon themselves to notify their viewers. It's well within their rights.

If these people want to prevent children in our new, more improved PC society then just show the cartoons in any pay per view channel. It's anything goes there anyway.

Do you know what Amazon Prime is? They're not doing it because anyone is making them, it's a private internet streaming service without any government censorship outside of illegal content.

1. It's Amazon that's being ridiculed in the media. So it is being taken up "with them."

2. Of course the copyright holder has the "right" to package the cartoons any way it wants. Not in question. But when the packaging reflects the neurotic obsessions of the PC-brigades, people are going to point it out.
