Fit, you do realize that the movie was based on an actual set of short stories, right? So your argument might be.. was the source material racist, which would be a better debate point about the racism of Disney
(That's sort of like the claim that Walt was a nazi proponent.)

RE: Amazon Prime Warns Users Classic Tom And Jerry Cartoons Are Racist…
Fit I'm not disputing that the stories and the movie were racist.
My point was that in that case, this looney leftie professor I had wanted to show that Disney was a racist SOB. Yet that "racist SOB" didn't show what would be seen as a racist movie.
Racist Movie made by Disney animators/movie makers
Racist movie shown to Walt Disney for approval
Walt Disney disapproves of the movie and it doesn't get shown.
Therefore Walt Disney is therefore a racist?
That's the kind of liberal looniness that college professors were trying to push (and this was was 15 to 20 years ago).

If your prof. Wanted to prove that Disney was racist, The Jungle Book would have been a better example.

He was definitely hung up on Dumbo in that regard... the Magipies, the circus workers, the slave songs, etc.

Guess:
The NRA needs to step in on behalf of Elmer Fudd.
The Stuttering Foundation steps in for Porky Pig.
The Lisp and Diabetes Awareness society for Sylvester the Cat.
The Little People of America for Tweety.

Song of the South was released. In fact, it was Disney's first full lenghth movie using live actors. It was just never released on home video.
from wikipedia
Quote:The film depicts the character Uncle Remus, a former slave, cheerfully relating to several children, including the film's protagonist, the folk tales of the adventures of anthropomorphic Br'er Rabbit and his friends. The film's song "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" won the 1947 Academy Award for Best Song, is frequently used as part of Disney's montage themes, and has become widely used in popular culture. The film inspired the Disney theme park attraction Splash Mountain.
The film's depiction of black former slaves, and of race relations in Reconstruction-Era Georgia, has been controversial since its original release, with a number of critics – at the time of its release and in later decades – describing it as racist. Consequently it has never been released in its entirety on home video in the United States.

I'll have to say I didn't realize it was released in its entirety either.. I know that segments were released (the animated portions) and I know a album soundtrack was released, my mom used to have all sorts of Disney records.

Okay so maybe I misremembered that it was in fact released in theaters and not released to video.
That I remembered the name of a 1946 Disney film that most people never heard of is pretty impressive though, you have to admit.

Yeah, I don't get the "Little People of America" for Tweety. Figured that would maybe be Greenpeace.

In 1985 I lived in Jonesboro, Georgia, down the street from my
duplex was a daycare named “ Song Of The South”
In 1986 I lived in Jackson Heights, Queens. down the street from my
apartment house was a daycare named “ Malcolm X”
Back then, no one had a problem with either name.
