I'd hope hateful speech in general would be banned...you can discuss and disagree, all without getting nasty.

I added religionism to the descriptions.

However, discussion of the merits and/or consequences of any given religion and/or atheism is still fair game.

In all honestly, and not to question the whole thing, but wouldn't a sort of "don't be a dick" mentality fit best? We are, after all, talking about things that people may find insulting and hurtful. It seems like it is pretty common sense when a person says something to be a dick and making sweeping dickish comments.

The trouble with common sense is how uncommon it is politically.

If everyone was capable of the don't be a dick policy, we wouldn't need mods anywhere on this website.

The extremists here are gonna have a tough time with all of these changes.

Is it not kind of funny that many who don't like the idea of a sort of protected class are quick to jump on the "include me in the don't make offensive comments about me" camp?

I'm not calling out Bull because I understand what he is saying given the approach but still.

Hell, we seem to have a mighty fine little political experiment going on!

The older one gets the less likely they communicate with knee-jerk venomous banter.

Although there are times I employ the use of veiled ridicule

As would be for other sexual lifestyles and cultures... I'm fine with that.

Of course you're right but when one says "Don't be a dick about race or sexual orientation" you're not saying "Don't be a dick to anyone"...

gts has corrected the issues and I though I disagree with the moderation I can no longer say it's not fairly applied.

Of course you're right but when one says "Don't be a dick about race or sexual orientation" you're not saying "Don't be a dick to anyone"...

Note that the penalty isn't particularly severe... so if someone makes a comment that someone else finds offensive... but it isn't overtly offensive... as I understand it the penalty wouldn't preclude them from posting. If they make a habit of it... it will.

Spirited and even angry disagreement is healthy... and I think we all make mistakes/lose our cool from time to time... and certain posters only seem to post at times to antagonize others rather than exchange perspectives...

Most of us just need a gentle nudge back in the right direction... Those that need a hammer will get it.

I like that..."the tantrum" rule...sometimes you just need to cool off and come back level-headed
