Using paper instead of plastic would seem to be at least slightly counter intuitive. The shift to plastic bags was caused partly by environmentalists who wanted to save the trees.

Hadn't heard the part about environmentalist. Back in high school I was working in a grocery store when the plastic bags were introduced. Always thought it was just due to cost in that plastic bags were cheaper than paper bags.

Depends on your point of view. The hippies wanted to save the trees and the market obliged because of the cost savings.

They also didn't realize the dangers that ubiquitous plastic usage would have on the environment.
