Registered Weapons
Kinda off topic, but interesting none the less.

So no hiding the fact, I'm a hunter. I like to spend time in the woods connecting with nature, watching animals, and if the right one comes along, flinging an arrow or taking a shot with a shotgun/rifle, and putting fresh organic free range meat on the table.

This year is my first year hunting in this state, never hunted here before and learning all the tricks and such. Well I work on a military installment, and I've worked on them before, usually you bring a weapon base, you inform the guard at the gate, and tell them where you're going and it's ok.

I was informed yesterday that since I'm legal to bow hunt on base, I have to register my compound bow with the installment, and when I come on, I notify the guards, present all paperwork, and I can only go from the gate, to the sign in point, to the area I want to hunt, back to the sign in point to sign out, and promptly off base. I cannot come on base with my registered compound bow with the assault quiver, go to work for 8-10 hours, then proceed to sign in and hunt. The fear is that I could go on a shooting rampage with the compound bow and injure several people. (They define a weapon as anything that shoots a projectile with the intent to cause harm or death).

Now I laugh at this because I'm a responsible compound bow owner. I never leave it loaded and laying around. However, is it really a fear that I'll come on base with 1000 arrows and begin a rampage like Legolas from Lord of the Rings, and take out people?

What are the thoughts of registering weapons like a bow? I agree with fire arms, but come on, when was the last time a responsible compound bow owner went crazy?

RE: Registered Weapons
I am presently looking into purchasing a bow, but I do not know any laws, regulations regarding them. That sounds very silly!

As far as registering firearms, I adamant about not mandating that!! Registration=Confiscation.

The Federal, State or Local Gubment, does not need to know what I own.!!

Because you said something about on base I am going to side with them. I have no problem with the Feds making whatever rules they wish on their own stuff and with the military doing as they see fit with weapons etc.

If you were just some private citizen on private land etc. then I am of the opinion that registering weapons is a bad thing ultimately.

RE: Registered Weapons
As a data point, I didn't need to register my firearm at work when I shot for their company sporting clays team.

I think it's kinda silly, however, I do see their point.

The town I live in will now allow you to shoot one inside the city limits even if targeting practice unless you're at an approved archery range.

I'm not gonna buck the system, I just thought it to be silly. Contrary to popular belief, I'll follow the rules or slightly bend them if need be.

Out here at Colorado Springs' Fort Carson, if you're wanting to shoot at their range there are a few similar requirements:
-only for active/guard/reserve and dependents
-need two dod cac-holders on the range
-attend the safety class for the range
-register every weapon you plan to bring on post with the provost marshal (could take a week to a few months time)

Maybe there is a stealth element to it. You could take out a lot of people before anyone would notice.

They'd have to be either very isolated or an instant kill shot. Seems pretty improbable to me.

That said, you could injure a good amount of unarmed people if you wanted to and they were afraid to charge you.

I think (not sure) Compound bows were always treated as firearms, and had to be registered.
