RE: Georgia Southern
Things can change quickly. Some GS fans are riding high right now and we should be -- it has been a good 5 games to start the year. But who knows how long Fritz will stay? Who knows if Louisiana or other Sun Belt team get on a roll too? And even the most die-hard GS fans has to admit that this years schedule, especially the conference schedule is on the light side.

I definitely thought that at the beginning of the season... Now I'm not so sure. If we were to take a poll today. We'd probably be playing 3 of the top 4 teams, and 2 of them are on the road. Tx State, USA, ULM.
We'll see once things shake out a bit in a few weeks where Louisiana sits. Definitely lucked out not having to play stAte though this season.
Not to mention both Ga Tech and NCstate could potentially end the season ranked the way they are playing.

Navy is nothing to sneeze at either...they took TxSt out.

Oh yes, I'm very familiar with what ASU is capable of; my wife went to undergrad there and they've played in Greenville twice in the last 5 years or so. Not an easy out either time.
Boone is a great place to watch a game but I hope the traffic has improved! Last saw a game there around 2000.

I think it all begins with available talent when you have the other three it is just easier to get that talent on campus. Honestly to me the coach is obviously very important but least important among the four you listed for sustained success. You can't buy tradition, relocate your campus to a great high school area like Fla and Ga and you can't force folks to come to games or truly be passionate for their team. Fritz appears to be great but he is not the end all be all and there are plenty of good coaches like him in the FCS and assistant coaching ranks. As long as we can stay away from the likes of Van Gorder GaSou will be fine. Anything less of competing year in and out for the conf championship and making bowls will get a coach fired quick and we can "buy" another promising coach with a similar FCS background. The GaSou fan base is never going to accept less.

The only thing one can say at this point is based on LAST years results the conference schedule appears to be "light". Lets see how the standings look at the end of the year. Outside of Troy and GaState I don't see anyone that is still not in it to some extent.

It is a shame that they are not eligible for a bowl this year, because they look like they could hang with most established FBS schools, and they would probably put a real scare into whomever they played.
ECU is a great model for us to follow.

I like ECU and Chappy is a great fan of football to give another team praise and a thumbs up.
GSU EAGLE, you know that I'm a rabid RGSU fan. When GSU entered FCS we were our own model. I say the same thing about the FBS & SBC. WE will create the model and then break the mold.

If anyone out there thinks it's bad for a first-year FBS team to be relevant in a G5 league, remind them of what Marshall and Nevada did in other leagues with established FBS/I-A programs.

I will say however, that I wish that Georgia Southern was entering the league maybe a couple years earlier when we still had very good MTSU and WKU programs hanging around, and tried to win the SBC in what was probably our best year as a league.
Admittedly, the entire league being down virtually is surprising, but I think my deepest regret is that GS is seeing NMSU, Idaho, and a Georgia State rather than some of our more classic teams.
We'll get a better reflection in a couple years as the other league members start to improve.
But what if GS keeps improving also?

Thanks Chappy. Played against your Pirates in 87 my freshman year. We lost by a couple points. Think you guys beat us in 86 too by 2 or 3 points. Had some good ones then. ECU, Middle Tenn, Central Fla, Marshall, to name a few each year. I guess the only one we never won was against you, the others we beat alot. It used to be fun when GS was independent and could play the different schools. Once they got into the Southern Conf. it was same ole same ole every year.

Traffic, not much improved, 321 and 421 majority is 4 lane now though, 105 of course throughout town 4 lane, added some parking decks but problem is all the improvements took to long now that the school truly doubles the pop. From 17k to 34k and on game day good luck with parking and traffic. Stadium is very different from when you last saw a game, maybe h&h in a couple years and come see how Boone has grown!

Then it depends on who improves at a faster rate. Though I want to see you guys hold onto Fritz despite serious interest first.

I sure hope we were smart enough to follow the Ark St model to get a nice payday if that day comes.

He's a good one. Let see how the next few years go, but he could end up being the best coach we have had since Erk. No one will ever come close to Erk.
