We will learn a lot about how the league will shape next week.
Big Matchups ahead

App State plays its first home game against an FBS Opponent as South Alabama comes to town. For the Mountaineers, this is a chance to see how they match up against the non Georgia Southern SBC teams. For South Alabama, this is a chance to get back to 2-1 in league and back in the title picture.

UL-Lafayette hosts Georgia State in the Cajuns league opener. Cajuns were a huge disappointment OOC, but open league play at home with a game they should win, but Georgia State has looked better this year, and if the Cajuns Defense isn't up to snuff, Arbuckle will pass for days. Georgia State plays Lafayette, Arkansas State, and Georgia Southern in three of the next 4 weeks. Its put up or shut up time in Atlanta.

Georgia Southern travels to New Mexico State for the Aggies Conference Home Opener. The books say that the Eagles should win easily, but Las Cruces is a tricky place to play, and Georgia Southern not only has two time zones in travel to deal with, but also the altitude of Las Cruces. For NMSU, this is a chance to make a statement that they are a player in the league this year with a 2-0 start.

Texas State hosts Idaho to open league play. Vandals are winless on the season and the Bobcats will be heavily favored, but Idaho has looked decent at times offensively. I wouldn't put it past Texas State to get a big lead and then screw around long enough to make this a close game. Bobcats will be out to prove that they are a bowl caliber team this year.

Arkansas State hosts UL-Monroe to open league play for the Red Wolves. Warhawks are 2-0 in league so far, but their 3-1 record includes three wins that were not exactly impressive. Arkansas State's suspect offensive line play will be tested against a ULM defense that loves to blitz. For the Red Wolves, results have them as one of the only impressive teams in league in OOC play, but they also have been madly inconsistent on offense, and have struggled in the kicking game. Can they out talent ULM like they have done to SBC teams in the past and make it 5 straight over the Warhawks? This game will tell us a ton about the conference race.

You should, but Las Cruces is not easy. I'm sure your guys have not made a lot of cross country road trips, and will have some adjustments to make with the altitude and time change. You will most likely win, but NMSU might be able to hang for a bit while the players get used to the conditions.

I think we win, but I agree that it will not be as easy as some think. We should run for as many yards as we want to though.

RE: We will learn a lot about how the league will shape next week.
We are #1 in the FBS in rushing yards and NMSU is the statistically the worst rushing D team in the country. I'm still not completely sure what to make of our defense, but I'd be disappointed if we didn't score a lot of points.

I think Texas State should have no problem with Idaho. I think I've seen enough from both teams so far.

Lack of a running capability will keep State from having a chance against UL. Arbuckle makes a valient effort but UL prevails.

I'm pretty much convinced StAte is legit now and I think we will learn more about ULM this week. I wasn't sold on them being legit after they beat Wake and I'm not convinced they're a pushover after Idaho and Troy.

I think USA at App will be a good one. With their offenses being very similar I see a low-scoring game that comes down to turnovers, special teams, and field position, which should favor USA. Of course the game is in Boone. Don't be fooled by the beauty of KBS and the surroundings, that place is pure evil.

Wake played Louisville tough and beat Army a week ago. They may not be as bad as we thought. However, ULM is probably in trouble against A State because our two starting corners are out for a few weeks, which completely changes our defense.

From what I have watched so far GaSouthern might be the best team in the conference. As the season wears on lack of depth as a transition team could slow them down, but looking at their schedule I won't be surprised to see them go between 8-4 to 10-2..Navy and the road game at Texas State might be the 2 biggest stumbling blocks..If they end up being the unrecognized conference champion because of the transition year it will be a shame for them, and a shame for the conference in outsiders eyes...I can hear the CUSA guys now...An FCS team was your conference champion....

It would not be "unrecognized" as we are eligible to win the title.

I don't understand why ESPN is dubbing the App St. v. USA game the "SunBelt Game of the Week." To me, the SGotW is ASU v. ULM. That game has lots more implications than the other.

I've been thinking the same thing. I've already heard some rumblings to that effect. This is why I hope, and sometimes pray, that every team performs flawlessly and no one gets hurt because I don't see GS ever tanking a season for the good of any conference's reputation.

We beat Florida to end last year, should have beat ncsu that gave FSU a battle, and undefeated GT needed a score with 23 seconds left to beat us. I think most people realize we are a good team so the fact we are a FCS move up holds little weight.

We would have a very good chance to win CUSA this year as well.

Meh. Let people rumble. If Georgia Southern has a great year it means that our FCS choices are competitive sooner rather than later.

It's also not as if Georgia Southern has just junkyarded their way so far. They have looked like an FBS team.
