Any recommendations for better-than-average restaurants and/or must-see places?

Restaurants:

La Posta-Mexican
Double Eagle-Mexican/American
Si Senor-Mexican
Lorenzos-Italian food
Zeffiros-Italian
El Sombreo-Mexican
St. Clair Winery & Bistro
Aqua Reef-Euro Cuisine

These are local eats that are I highly recommend if you want to stay away from the chain restaurants. Also, visit Old Mesilla. Almost half of the restaurants I listed are in Old Mesilla. We have beautiful mountains and on both sides of the mountain there are some nice parks. If you like to play golf I would play at the NMSU Golf Course and second would be Red Hawk. Sonoma Ranch course is in pretty bad condition and Picacho Hills is a private country club.

RE: GA Southern fans
Been on several trips to NM the last few years, unfortunately they were all to Clovis. I spent about 2 months out there in 2012, and another month or so out there last year. I've had my fill of NM for now, so I'll be missing this one. I'll probably try and make the next one though, I eventually want to hit all the SBC stadiums.

Name may be the same but it is a local owner not affiliated with any other restaurants. You guys will love the weather and the scenery. Clovis is a toilet. Las Cruces is a larger city and much better scenery.

I like to think that I'm plenty open-minded about trying new things and recognizing when some other place's joint is better than mine.

That said, I knowingly and willingly eschew all authentic (and probably delicious) Mexican or Tex-Mex food in favor of The Hat.

Cliche or not, sometimes you just have to have standards and rules, dammit. Perhaps I'll watch Saturday's game while downing a 48 oz. Texas margarita or two.

El Sombrero is not good Mexican food. Only reason it is adored in the Boro is because it is a watering hole that is as lax with IDs as a landscaping business

Nope. Normally didn't have trouble getting on a pool table either.

RE: GA Southern fans
Here is a good Beautiful Eagle Creek story for you. When Chris Hatcher was coach at GS, he had a WR who was dropping passes left and right during practice. He told the kid to go get in the water and wash his hands with it. The kid did and never dropped a ball the rest of the day. Ya got to believe!!!
