Regent Jim Stapleton
http://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/.../16065277/
"Big Michigan booster and current Eastern Michigan University regent Jim Stapleton accused me of falling off a truck and bumping my head.
He said Hoke is the right man for the job and will win Big Ten titles if he is allowed to keep his job."
I didn't know that Stapleton is a big Michigan booster. Isn't this a conflict of interest? Wasn't Stapleton a big defender of English?
I think it is time we get a new regent.

RE: Regent Jim Stapleton
Dear EMU03,
This is the big problem of having people appointed by the governor, rather then being elected to the position as it is done with U-M, MSU, and Wayne State.
Even with the appointment position that Eastern is under, try and find out what are the qualifications for being appointed regent.
I wrote Governor Granholm when she was in office to see if I could qualify for consideration to be appointed as a regent. Never even got a reply that I was, or was not qualified. I think it has to do with who has been loyal to the party in office, and what kind of money one ponies up. That's why I would like to see our regents elected, and stop all of this "Who has scratched my palm".

No doubt. Just one more reason why EMU suffers in so many areas.
Buffoons rewarded for their political serfdom with the governance of
some of Michigan's educational institutions. Might want to contact your state legislator after the election to see if we can get this corrected.

I saw that article/column and almost created a thread. I couldn't find out if Stapleton is a uofm alum. Clearly I'd like to know if he has similar passion for EMU.

Stapleton is a Class A idiot. The man has no place being anywhere near universities or athletic departments.

RE: Regent Jim Stapleton
I saw his bio on the emich.edu, but it didn't give his academic background. I was wondering if he went to uofm. That would explain his far more than casual interest in the wolverweenies.
Last fall when English was let go there was a regent who went public defending him and trashing EMU. Is this the same regent?

Yes.
Regardless of which governor appointed them lets review the fact this group of regents have hired some very good people at EMU, overseen a huge fund raising activity or activities and the facilities have improved. Its easy to focus on one individual and one area like athletics. Under the leadership of this group of regents has EMU as a university improved overall? That should be the question asked. I think the answer is yes, I see EMU as an institution moving forward in many positive ways.

I think the salient issue here is not Stapleton and UofM but that the chair of the EMU Athletic Committee for the Regents is Hawks.
Stapleton is a regent, to be sure, but shouldn't be the 'go to' regent for athletics.

It is pretty outrageous that an EMU regent is publicly identified as a "big Michigan booster." But, nothing surprises me any more.

You make a good point. Currently most of the regents are more dedicated to their duties than in the past. But wouldn't it be better if we could throw the rascals out and keep the good ones. Rather than they being rewarded for some political backing. Better they be rewarded for their loyalty to EMU rather than some politician.
