The great thing about the terms 'right' and 'left' is that they're wholly dependent on a persons perspective, and in no way meaningful as objective measurements.

You left El Paso out. This town is a mini-California and our taxes prove that. With what I pay in taxes (6500+) every year I could rent an apartment, not a great apartment but one nonetheless.

I lived in California for 21 years before living in El Paso for 2. The people in EP think they pay high taxes - they don't, at least not compared to California. EP is quite conservative by California standards. Does the El Paso Times still have a religious quote in their Editorial section? That would never happen in California.

Larger than New Orleans and probably a couple of others on the list, but:

1. It isn't really a city. The population is high because its limits inclide a massive area, but the setting of the massive area is 70% suburban and 30% rural as it spreads all the way to some podunk areas on the NC border. It is basically suburban Norfolk. The only part that is "urban" is a 3 block fake downtown that was built by the government about 10 years or so ago.

2. As I said before, the mayor is not a republican. Local elections are "non partisan", but the guy supported Terry McAuliffe. He runs a local bank and is truly a crony capitalist and opportunist out for enriching himself.

The people running Memphis aren't necessarily "leftists" per say. They're just morons. Thankfully, those of us in Shelby County, but not in Memphis city limits have a county mayor, sheriff, and DA who are all Republicans. Also, the state gov is a GOP supermajority and that isn't changing anytime soon. If Memphis leaders go a little too far-- the state just slaps them back into place.

Biggest example--

City and county used to be separate school systems. The city was majority black, poor, parents who didn't care and a complete failure. The county was majority white, middle class, parents were involved, and they were pretty good. Anyone who can afford to, sends their kids to private school. City schools surrendered their charter and tried to force a merger with the county and decided since Memphis was the bulk of the population that they were going to control the schools. It was nothing but a way to funnel money from those of us in the county who had a little $ to the broke asses in the city who didn't. The city was already spending more per student and still was the worst system in TN. A bunch of arrogant Democrats were behind this merger and were constantly on TV with a "in your face" attitude. We had to vote to authorize our own municipal schools TWICE after the 1st time was ruled in violation of an existing state law. The GOP supermajority in Nashville voted and changed the law, we got our own schools, and the foot stomping, whining and crying from the Memphis libs was a thing of beauty.

Honestly, a ton of moderate Republicans wouldn't vote for Cuccinelli and how can you blame them after the Bob McDonnell crap hit the fan? The GOP in Virginia needs to have a record of effective, economically-based leadership and instead is having one of their recent elected officials convicted of corruption.

Granted, I shouldn't have said 'registered' as it is misleading (although he is 'registered' with the actual Virginia Beach Republican Party), but he certainly identifies as a Republican. He is a crony capitalist, that's for sure. However, I don't know of any justification why he is a statist liberal.
