Temple --- Major medical discovery....
http://www.temple.edu/medicine/temple_re..._cells.htm
Just wanted to pop over to the American board and say congrats to Temple researchers. This is one of the biggest things in medical discovery in a century, and something that should be recognized, even though it's non sports related.
Not only a cure for HIV, but a method to cure, prevent re infection, and immunize for any number of viruses in the world.
This is major. And what our academic institutions are all about, as well as preparing young adults to be the minds of the future to make even bigger discoveries.
Well done Temple. Congrats to you.

Absolutely. Still have preclinical trials, animal trials, human trials, but the science is definetly there and a new way to fight things vs suppression.

Very encouraging news, to be sure, although I wouldn't describe it as "a cure for HIV". We're many, many years away from that, IMHO.

RE: Temple --- Major medical discovery....
That was when they published their work.
There are lots of sites picking this up. I just went to the original source for a link.
Still a ways to go, but not a long way IMO.
Exciting to see success, and the real reason research is needed.

after reading the article it almost sounds like they created a hunter killer virus to fight the hiv virus. i have no medical background so you smart folks tell me if i read it wrong.
it could be the first step towards a zombie apocalypse too

Not a hunter killer virus, but guided gene therapy.
It's been a while since I studied HIV, but the thing that makes it so hard to treat is that it's a retrovirus--it infects cells by inserting its DNA material into the normal cell's DNA, transforming body cells into virus producers.
This therapy appears to guide the natural enzymes that cut DNA to the stretch from the HIV virus, and remove it.
Ingenious. It will be be fascinating to see how it develops. There are other (lesser know, less catastrophic) retroviruses that could be treated with this as well.

Good stuff. Thanks to the OP. Haven't heard this before. Amazing breakthrough. Let's hope they are successful in taking it through to the end result needed.

Glad to see an AAC get the recognition for such a big achievement. Frankly, however, if I had my way, the money directed toward HIV would have been spent on cancer and heart disease research.

Yeah, the Nuclease takes out the HIV's nucleotides with the help of the gRNA. Not sure how they get the gRNA to target the virus though. Help?
Edit: nevermind they've programmed the gRNA to find the viral DNA. Not sure how they do that though?
